Ban Comic Sans

In 1995 Microsoft released the font Comic Sans originally designed for comic book style talk bubbles containing informational help text. Since that time the typeface has been used in countless contexts from restaurant signage to college exams to medical information. These widespread abuses of printed type threaten to erode the very foundations upon which centuries of typographic history are built.

Google Acquires Internet (May 2017)

MAY 12, 2017 - BUSINESSWIRE. Mountain View-based search giant Google Inc today announced they’ve acquired the internet for the astounding sum of $2,455.5 billion in cash. The deal had been rumored in various search blogs since the beginning of the year and was now confirmed by the company’s CEO. “This is in line with our vision to make information more accessible to end users,” says Eric Schmidt. “With the acquisition, we can increase the speed of indexing as everything will already be on our servers by the time it’s published.”
 
In a conference call earlier today, Larry Page explained the strategy behind the acquisition. “We realized it’s not very cost-effective to buy the internet in smaller portions.” During the past two decades, Google had acquired YouTube for $1.65, DoubleClick for $3.1 billion, AOL for $12.5 billion, and last year, Microsoft for the record sum of $120 billion.

WOW - Vista und IE: Größtenteils Sicher

Benutzer von Windows Vista und dem IE7 können sich „sicher” fühlen. Laut dem Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-017 sind Benutzer des IE7 unter Windows Vista vor den Angriffen über den „Animierten Cursor Exploit” dank des „Protected Mode” geschützt. Klingt doch super, oder? Ja, wenn man ein paar Details außer Acht lässt. So schreibt etwa Robert Vamosi, dass Angreifer trotz des „Protected Mode” - einer Art Sandkiste für den Browser - auf Daten des betroffenen Users zugreifen können. Lediglich das ausführen von bösen Programmen unterbindet der „Proteced Mode”. Also für mich ist es ein Problem, wenn irgendwelche Typen meine Daten lesen können – da kann Microsoft 20x schreiben, dass ich mit Vista und IE7 „protected” bin. Und dann gibt es ja noch ein paar „Einschränkungen” bezgl. des „Proteced Mode”. So wird dieser etwa per default für „Vertrauenswürdige” und „Lokale” Seiten deaktiviert. Ebenso, wenn die User Account Control (UAC) deaktiviert wird, der IE als Administrator ausgeführt wird oder eine HTML-Datei vom lokalen Rechner ausgeführt wird. „OK. Und?” höre ich jetzt viele (virtuell) Fragen. Nun ja. UAC ist für viele bereits der legitime Nachfolger der legendär-nervigen Büroklammer „Karl Klammer” aus Office und wird daher von genervten Usern einfach abgedreht. Und wer nach der (alten) Anleitung des ClubDigitalHome versucht hat, die Digitale Signatur und Bürgerkarte mit Vista einzurichten, hat UAC und „Protected Mode” entweder komplett angedreht oder bereits so durchlöchert, dass sie sowieso keinen erntshaften Schutz mehr bieten würden. Ich würde daher postulieren, dass sich der IE7 unter Vista hinsichtlich des „Animierten Cursor Exploits” nur unwesentlich von anderen Browsern – egal ob von Microsoft oder anderen Herstellern – unterscheidet. Unsicher sind sie unter Windows alle.

Aus GAIM wird jetzt Pidgin

GAIM, die beliebte Open Source Instant Messaging Software, hat letzte Woche ihren Namen in „Pidgin” geändert. Ursache dafür: Ein langwieriger Rechtsstreit mit AOL, die sich über das ursprüngliche GAIM Akronym „GTK+ AOL Instant Messenger” aufregten. GAIMPidgin

Wostok 1 - 12. April 1961

Wostok 1 war der erste bemannte Weltraumflug. Mit Juri Gagarin gelangte am 12. April 1961 zum ersten Mal ein Mensch in die Erdumlaufbahn. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatten die Amerikaner laut Wikipedia mit ihrem Mercury-Programm noch keinen einzigen Flug in der Erdumlaufbahn vorzuweisen. Ihre Tierversuche beschränkten sich auf drei suborbitale Flüge mit Affen. Komisch, bis auf BoingBoing habe ich in den sonst sehr Raumflug-affinen US-Online-Medien nichts zu dem Thema gefunden. :)

Solche Formulierungen würde ich gerne vermehrt in der deutschsprachigen IT-Presse lesen:

IBM’s new server targets the ‘i’ in SMB
 
IBM has released what it claims is an all-singing, all-dancing box designed for the industry’s craze-du-jour, the SMB market.
 
The company’s angle is simplicity for the System i Express, the latest addition to the SMB System i server line.
 
With infomercial flair at a press and analyst event in San Francisco today, IBM’s System i general manager Mark Shearer pulled a sheet revealing a row of six Dell servers. On the opposite table was the Express system.
 
„Why would you want all this when all you need is this!”
 
It slices! It dices!
 
IBM hopes to woo multiple Windows-based server users with a single box that comes with a built-in OS, security tools, backup and recovery software, web-based management and a web server.
 
„It’s a datacenter in a box,” Shearer said. „Everything is pre-integrated.”
 
The company message was that the box is so easy to use that customers can survive massive layoffs in their IT department. (This was met with jovial laughs. Clearly admins were not invited to the party.)
 
Of course it wouldn’t be a proper modern IBM gathering without wistful recollections of the past.
 
„We hope the System i will bring IBM back to its server and database glory days,” VP of worldwide System i sales Bill Donohue said. „This is the way we’re going to go after new customers.”

256 Terabyte Hauptspeicher

The Register reports on Suns newest SPARC-CPU „Rock”:

In the past, we’ve disclosed that Rock will run two threads per core, giving it 32 threads per chip. In addition, the 256TB of memory described by Schwartz would come via a 8-socket box that holds 512 DIMMs …

Now, if Microsoft would still support the SPARC-Platform, a Platinum Boulder Box would make one hell of a Vista Machine.
