Wie im Kindergarten

„Tante, Tante, der Steve hat mit einem Sessel nach mit geschmissen! Ja, aber nur weil mich Samuel vorher geärgert hat” – so kommt mir momentan die Diskussion/Streiterei rund um die versuchte, schnelle ISO-Zertifizierung von Microsofts neuem Office-Dateiformat OOXML vor. Microsoft freut sich: Deutschland unterstützt ISO-Zertifizierung von Open XML, C|Net berichtet: The world’s fastest-growing economies [China, India, Brazil] reject Microsoft. In Österreich herrscht Stille: Aktuelle Presseaussendungen des Österreichischen Normungsinstituts. Apple und Sun halten sich relativ bedeckt (keinen Pieps hört man), die Vertreter von Microsoft, IBM und verschiedensten Open Source Interessensverbänden feinden sich in Statements, Aussendungen und Aktions-Aufrufen gegenseitig an. Die verschiednenen Blogs, Websites, etc. verlink ich nicht mal mehr, weil mit einer sachlichen Doskussion auf Basis von Fakten und technischen Daten hat das alles schon lange nicts mehr zu tun. Gerhard Göschls (Microsoft Östereich) letzter Blogeintrag zu diesem Thema zeigt das recht schön (den verlink ich allerdings auch nicht). Ich hab von der ganzen Diskussion eigentlich nur mehr Genug. Hier geht es nicht mehr darum, einen Standard zu finden (den es mit PDF/A eigentlich schon gäbe), sonder nur noch darum, die Befindlichkeiten, Interessen und die Geldbörsen der verschiedenen Unternehmen zu befriedigen. Die Interessen und Anforderungen der Kunden der streitenden Unternehmen spielen dabei schon lange keine Rolle mehr. Am liebesten wäre mir, dass nach der ISO-Verabschiedung von OOXML (und wer zweifelt daran, wenn man die Kriegskasse Microsofts kennt), ein drittes, unabhängiges Unternehmen käme, einen dritten Vorschlag unterbreiten würde, dieser von der ISO abgesegnet würde und all die Banken, Regierungsbehörden und Unternehmen Sun, Novell, IBM, Microsoft und den Open Source Vertretern den virtuellen Finger zeigen und diesen dritten Standard benutzen würden. Das wäre schön.

A history of the Amiga

The Amiga computer was a dream given form: an inexpensive, fast, flexible multimedia computer that could do virtually anything. It handled graphics, sound, and video as easily as other computers of its time manipulated plain text. It was easily ten years ahead of its time.

oe24.at - Die Luft ist draußen

Anfang September 2006 hab ich mich ja über die „heiße Luft”, also die zahlreichen Leerzeilen und die Größe der oe24-Homepage ausgelassen. Dass die Herrschaften mittlweile einen „relaunch” getätigt haben, bekam ich nur über Franz Enzenhofers Blog mit. Also schnell mal einen Blick auf die neue Homepage geworfen. Und tatsächlich – sie haben die Startseite optimiert (was ja nicht wirklich eine Herausforderung war). Die Dateigröße der index.html konnte halbiert werden - von 120 KB runter auf unter 60 KB! Dafür sind sie sehr größzügig mit den Zeilenschaltungen umgegangen – zum Glück ist da HTML nicht so empfindlich. Nicht geschafft haben sie es hingegen, dem Server/den Servern auch die Komprimierung der Seiten beizubringen - mit gzip wird noch immer nix geschickt. Na vielleicht im nächsten Jahr. Und nein, weder Inhalt noch Layout haben sich IMHO wirklich verbessert.

My contact at Google discovered that someone had actually hacked my site and was displaying search engine spam to search engine bots only!

Vadim Smelyansky as it turns out, is not shy on the internet. His rather unique name returns 294 pages in Google currently, including a LinkedIn profile page describing him as a Software Engineer at “SEM Professionals”.

Continuing down through the search results we find his latest website, www.vadiaz.com with a resume up-to-date as of September 2006, describing him as working for a company called “SEM Professional” in Israel. Apparently he worked for Microsoft from 2003-2006 just before deciding to engage in criminal activities.

The IT Crowd -- Season Two, Episode One

Hurray! The first episode of season two of The IT Crowd has aired! The IT Crowd is set in the offices of Reynholm Industries, a fictitious British corporation in central London. It focuses on the shenanigans of the three-strong IT support team. Channel 4, the show’s homebase, has a ridiculous DRM-based web-viewing option. The universe has a huge hole in it that dwarfs anything else of its kind. The discovery caught astronomers by surprise.

Epidemiologists learn from World of Warcraft plague

A new villain, a winged serpent called Hakkar, originally designed as a challenge for only the strongest characters, started transmitting its “corrupted blood” virus down the ranks until it affected almost every area and every player in the game.
 
The scientists were able to monitor how quickly the disease spread and where to, while assessing the players’ individual responses to the outbreak. The particular features of the game, such as the many hours players around the world dedicate to it and the emotional investment they put into their online alter egos, offer scientists a tantalisingly close match to real social conditions.
