Wait six months after SP1 to tackle Vista

„Wait for six months after Vista SP1 [Service Pack 1] appears before moving to Vista,” recommended David Milman, CEO of Rescuecom Corp., which operates a chain of IT support franchises. „Microsoft certainly does need to address Vista’s problems [with SP1], but we’re telling customers to stay with XP for at least the rest of 2007 and through much of 2008 if SP1 is delayed to the start of that year.”

Lustig: Aktuelle Windows Vista Referenzen

In dem verweifelten Versuch, etwas mehr Akzeptanz für „Windows ME” unter den NT-basierten Windows-Versionen zu schaffen, hab ich eine lustige Übersicht über aktuelle „Referenzen” bezgl. Windows Vista bekommen. 1) Österreichischer Cartellverband Laber, laber, laber, Seit kurzem setzt der Österreichische Cartellverband bei der Betreuung seiner Mitglieder auf Windows Vista Business von Microsoft, laber, laber, laber, Schnelles Netzwerk, laber, laber, laber, Rund 12.000 Mitglieder zählt der Österreichische Cartellverband , laber, laber laber. Gleichzeitig mit der Umstellung auf Windows Vista wurde auch ein modernes Netzwerk installiert. OK, was hat das mit Vista und dem schnelleren Netzwerk zu tun? Vor allem, wenn man Musik hört, wird das Netzwerk eh wieder langsamer. Kundenunternehmensgröße PC: i1 bis 10 ZEHN!!! Eine $DEITY-verdammte Success-Story über ZEHN PCs. WTF?!?!?!?!?!?! Da gleiche Setup hätte man mit Windows 98, NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Mac oder Linux genauso aufsetzten können. mit den selben Benefits und vermutlich sogar billiger. Oida! 2) Niederländisches Verteidigungsministerium Das niederländische Verteidigungsministerium setzt auf Windows Vista, um die Kosten für das Deployment von Desktop PCs und für den Support um 10% jährlich zu senken. Liest man sich die Referenz genau durch, steht dort: The Ministry hopes to start upgrading its 50,000 desktop computers in early 2008.. Und das, obwohl das Vertiedigungsministerium im Microsoft Windows Vista Technology Adoption Program war. Heiße 125 von ~ 50,000 PCs haben derzeit Vista drauf. Und Rollout-Termin gibts auch noch keinen fixen (ev. post-SP1?). Aber Microsoft macht schon eine Referenz-Story. Eugen! 3) OTTO setzt auf Windows Mit Microsoft .NET 3.0 und mit Windows Vista setzt OTTO nun auch auf eine Online-Shopping Experience, die den Besuchern beindruckende Grafiken und sicheren E-Commerce ermöglichen. Wenn ich das mal übersetzten darf: Otto hat auf Basis von .Net 3.0 Technolgien (Presentation Foundation, Windows Communication Foundation, Windows CardSpace) einen Online-Shop Client entwickelt. Also ein Programm, das sich die Otto-Kunden auf dem PC installieren sollen. Und .NET 3.0 Programme laufen sowohl auf XP, als auch auf Vista. Und das ist eine Vista-Referenz ??? 4) Stadtgemeinde Rom (Comune di Roma) Die Stadt Rom setzt tagtäglich 13.000 Arbeitsstationen und 1.000 Laptops ein. Um die Management Komplexität (bei rund 800 Arbeitsbereichen in ganz Rom) einzudämmen und die TCO (Total Costs of Ownership) zu senken, verwendet Rom Windows Vista. OK, klingt nach einer netten Referenz. Tja, schaut nur so lange gut aus, bis man den ganzen Text liest: Comune di Roma is using a prerelease version of the Windows Vista™ operating system to evaluate both its security and user experience. […] Comune di Roma anticipates that upgrading to Windows Vista will enhance public service by providing …. Alles im Futur!!! Da ist noch nix produktiv! Und das verkauft Micorosft als Referenz! WTF?! Fassen wir also zusammen. Für die wichtigen Dienste bei der Olympiade nächste jahr ist Vista nicht stabil genug, von dem vier genannten Referenzen hat EINE tatsächlich etwas mit einer ERFOLGTEN Migration/Upgrade auf Vista zu tun – und das mit 10 PCs. Da kommt mir bei „Around 560,000 students in 33 German Universities will soon be running SuSe Linux Enterprise Desktop Platform!” schon eher ein WOW aus.

SONY: Lieber Kunde, ab jetzt wird alles anders

Ich habe ja schon Anfang Juli darüber geschrieben und auch der MP3-Walkman von Sony hat darauf hingewiesen, aber jetzt ist es offiziell: Sony schließt seinen Connect Music Store. Also liebe Sony-Kunden, solltet ihr DRM-geschützte ATRAC-Files (hoffentlich weiß in ein paar Jahren keiner mehr, was das ist) haben, dann betet, dass euere Hard- und Software lange hält. Weil in MP3 dürft ihr nur nicht DRM. geschützte Dateien konvertieren. Alle Infos gibts in der CONNECT Support FAQ „Amüsant” ist auch Sonys Definition von „offen”. Mit „Walkman goes Open” bewirbt Sony nämlich die Tatsache, dass in den neuen Modellen nun auch MP3s ohne DRm unterstützten. Was IMHO ziemlich pervers ist, weil das Unternehmen im selben Zug ankündigt, dass die neuen Walkman alle Windows Media Player 11 drauf haben werden. OPEN ??? We can skim through blogs, but its harder to skim through podcasts. We are used to reading web pages, but listening to a lengthy discussion without a visual is not something that we’re used to on the web.

Windows Vista - Das Betriebssystem mit den vielen Handbremsen

Während sich Georg noch wie ein Schneekönig freut, dass die „Handbremse lösen”-Updates (Update zur Verbesserung der Leistung und Zuverlässigkeit von Windows Vista, Update zur Verbesserung der Kompatibilität und Zuverlässigkeit von Windows Vista) nun auch über Windows Update erhältlich sind und das Windows Vista Service Pack 1 angekündigt wurde, hat Mark Russinovich, Technical Fellow in the Platform and Services Division at Microsoft, einen HEFTIGEN Performance-Bug in der Vista-Archtektur gefunden. Der in Vista neue Dienst „Multimedia Class Scheduler Service” (MMCSS) sollte eigentlich die Wiedergabe von Audio- und Videoinhalten verbessern, indem es die entsprechenden Prozesse höher priorisiert (unabhängig vom Player, also auch für iTunes und Co). Tatsache ist allerdings, dass die Wiedergabe von Systemtönen und anderen Mediendaten den Netzwerkdurchsatz halbieren kann. Grund: Der Empfang von Netzwerkdaten kann CPU-Performance kosten, weil bei jedem empfangenen Paket ein CPU-Interrupt ausgelöst wird. Der Prozessor muss also jedes mal seine Arbeit (z.B. die Wiedergabe eines MP3s) liegen lassen, um sich um das Datenpaket aus dem Netzwerk zu kümmern. Das kann, unter Umstäden, zu Aussetzern bei der MP3-Wiedergabe führen. Den Vista-Entwicklern war allerdings die Wiedergabe der Multimedia-Inhalte wichtiger, daher lässt der MMCSS, der Bestandteil des Vista-Kernels ist, nicht mehr als 10.000 Netzwerkpakete pro Sekunde zu. OK, das wäre nur in einem Gigabit-Netzwerk bemerkbar und würde dort zu einem Durchsatzverlust von ca. 15 Prozent führen. Wäre da nicht ein kleiner Bug im MMCSS, der diese Durchsatzbremse mit jedem angeschlossenen Netzwerkdadapter vergrößert. Ethernet und WLAN? Schon dürfen es nur mehr 8.000 Pakete pro Sekunde sein. Hast Du einen Bluetooth-Adapter auch noch angeschlossen? Dann nimmt Vista nur mehr 6.000 Netzwerkpakete pro Sekunde an. Bis der Bug (vermutlich im SP2) behoben ist, kann man dieses Verhalten zum Glück auch anderes beheben, wie ein Leser von Marks Blog beschreibt:

So I ran regedit, and changed the key
 
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Audiosrv\DependOnService
 
Just remove MMCS from that key in the list, and set MMCS to disabled in services, then reboot.
 
As soon as I rebooted I was able to copy files at 40mb/s+ while listening to audio

„Timing Update”? Pah. It Got DELAYED!

there is a lot of excitement here in Redmond Thank $DEITY for the free soft drinks! With enough sugar an caffeine, everybody would get excited.

this seems like the best place to let you know that Windows Server 2008, which we have been saying would Release to Manufacturing (RTM) by the end of the calendar year, is now slated to RTM in the first quarter of calendar year 2008.

Let me translate: „We hope, that by publishing this in a blog and not on our official site, those pesky analysts and reporters will not find out”. Quality, Price, Time – pick any two. So instead of December 2007, we are now talking about March/April 2008 for the Windows Server 2008 with all its goodies like Virtualization. Windows Server 2008 Timing Update

Vista breaks Outlook Web Access The nice thing for Microsoft is that they can always „recall” those messages, as they were only published on a blog an not as „official company communication”. And they probably hope that only a few irrelevant freaks but no reporters/decision makers/financial analysts find out.

„TIM &TOM WERBEGRAFIK” sind eindeutig noch nicht im 21. Jahrhundert angekommen. Die Homepage der (AMS oder Humboldt geschulten?) Werbegrafiker sieht im Firefox so aus: Kann man nur hoffen, dass sie primär im Print-Bereich tätig sind. Gefunden via Xing.
