Social panel replay with Paul Mooney, Luis Suarez and Femke Goedhart at BLUG 2012 | IdoNotes (and sleep)

An incredible social panel at the Belux Lotus User Group for the second year of BLUG 2012. I moderate an excellent conversation with Luis Suarez, Paul Mooney and Femke Goedhart around such questions as the first item checked daily, is email social, is there social sharing bullying, social acronyms in business environments and plenty direct from the audience.

Angstrhetorik: Schluss mit „per Mausklick”! — www.zeit.de — Readability

xpages - Is there a performance hit in SSJS when using @Functions? - Stack Overflow

All SSJS is parsed into an AST (abstract syntax tree) at runtime. In other words, your code just remains a String until the exact moment that it is executed, at which point a parser examines that String to syntactically identify what the code contains: which characters denote variables, which are operators, functions, etc. This is why SSJS is always slower than the directly equivalent Java: if you just write your code in Java to begin with, then it’s compiled into bytecode the moment you build your project, but perhaps more importantly, at runtime it doesn’t have to „guess” what code to run by parsing a String… it just runs the Java code you already defined. But if your goal is optimization, you’ll gain far more improvement by moving all code from SSJS blocks to bean methods than you will by eschewing the convenience of @Functions in favor of native JavaScript, because even native JavaScript has to be parsed into an AST.

It’s time to start using JavaScript strict mode | NCZOnline

ECMAScript 5 introduced strict mode to JavaScript. The intent is to allow developers to opt-in to a “better” version of JavaScript, where some of the most common and egregious errors are handled differently. For a while, I was skeptical, especially with only one browser (Firefox) initially supporting strict mode. Fast forward to today, every major browser supports strict mode in their latest version, including Internet Explorer 10 and Opera 12. It’s time to start using strict mode.

God’s own keyboard, now with Bluetooth - Hack a Day

For decades a thunderous roar rose from the bowels of IBM keyboards like the animus of angry and forgotten gods. These keyboards have fallen silent of late, due only to incompatibility with newer hardware. Now, Model Ms have been given a reprieve from landfills or recycling centers because of the work of [wulax] of geekhack and his Model M Bluetooth controller board. [wulax] got around all these problems by taking the Bluetooth controller out of a cheap mini keyboard and mapping the Model M rows and columns to it. A PCB was made and a rather large battery t stuffed inside the Model M. Now a keyboard from 1984 is wireless and able to interface with just about every computer made in the last few years.

Pirate Bay to take its servers to the skies | News | TechRadar

The Pirate Bay has announced that it is turning to the skies to house its servers and is looking into sending a drone into low orbit, so that the only way someone can shut down its operations is by aeroplane. In a blog post which wouldn’t look out of place on 1 April, the folks behind the Pirate Bay are fed up with the heat they are getting on the ground so they have decided to make use of the latest technology – namely Raspberry Pi – and literally take flight. „With the development of GPS controlled drones, far-reaching cheap radio equipment and tiny new computers like the Raspberry Pi, we’re going to experiment with sending out some small drones that will float some kilometers up in the air,” explained the post. „This way our machines will have to be shut down with aeroplanes in order to shut down the system. A real act of war.”

IBM Could Become The Biggest Player In The Cloud - Seeking Alpha

While IBM Docs will have to compete directly with more popular and competitively priced products like Google Docs, Microsoft Office 365 and a number of other online office suites, IBM is betting on ”enterprise-grade security” and its “collective” offering to draw customers. The same is true for most of IBM’s cloud offerings, i.e. they all individually have a number of competitors, but there is no other company that offers all of the them collectively. This could turn out to be huge strategic advantage for IBM. In this intensely competitive market where every player is mindlessly adding services and solutions to its cloud portfolio, a more strategic approach is what will determine who makes the most out of this mammoth opportunity. From the looks of it, IBM might just be doing that.

IBM Sametime wiki: Integrating: Integrating Java desktop applications with IBM Sametime using the Sametime Proxy Server

ntroduced with IBM Sametime version 8.5, the Sametime Proxy Server is a Web-based application server allowing applications to securely integrate with IBM Sametime and benefit from its real-time collaborative features, using a simple HTTP-based Representational State Transfer (REST) API and the JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) data format. The main integration targets are rich Internet applications written in JavaTMScript, but thanks to its powerful and language-agnostic REST API, the Sametime Proxy Server can be used to provide real-time collaborative capabilities to any applications. In this article, we specifically demonstrate how it can be used to integrate IBM Sametime with Java desktop applications. To get the most from the article, you should have a general understanding of HTTP and the REST architecture, and a feature-level knowledge of IBM Sametime.

IBM pushes Smarter Planet, but how edgy is firm?

The real stunner, though, may be the one in which IBM discloses that improvements to the Washington, D.C., sewer system were „built off analytics that predict traffic in Singapore and helped prepare for flooding emergencies in Rio.” Beat that, Facebook. Outside of Apple, it’s hard to think of another tech company that celebrates itself with as much skill as IBM. Just a few years ago, IBM peddled PCs, disk drives and other basic building blocks of computing. Now it sells itself as a kind of tech visionary able to reshape cities in a single bound through analytics software and the brainiest consultants on the planet. On some level, the Smarter Planet pitch, unveiled in November 2008, appears to resonate with the public. IBM has an ethos that speaks to the future, while rivals such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Oracle often seem like they’re doing the same old, same old.

European Parliament Blocks Copyright Reform With 113% Voter Turnout - Falkvinge on Infopolicy

When a work has gone orphan, it means that it is effectively lost until the copyright monopoly expires, 70 years after the creator’s death. You can only hope that somebody has kept a copy illegally and copied it across new forms of storage media as they go in and out of fashion as the decades come and go, or it will be lost forever. The vote in committee on March 1 was supposed to end that (or, more technically, recommend a course of ending that to the European Parliament as a whole). However, the copyright industry lobby won key points in the voting procedure with 14 votes against reform and 12 in favor of it, according to the just-published protocol. There’s a problem with this. There are 24 seats in the committee, and one group (non-inscrits) was absent, lacking deputies to fill that person’s vote. So, there should have been 23 votes at the most. But we just counted 12 votes for reform and 14 against. That’s 26.

John R. MacArthur: Internet con men ravage publishing | This New England Blog | providencejournal.com | The Providence Journal

However, as much as I object to free content, I am even more offended by the online sensibility and its anti-democratic, anti-emotional, even anti-intellectual effect. Devotees of the Internet like to say that the Web is a bottom-up phenomenon that wondrously bypasses the traditional gatekeepers in publishing and politics who allegedly snuff out true debate. But much of what I see is unedited, incoherent babble indicative of a herd mentality, not a true desire for self-government or fairness.

my1Login - Trustworthy Passwordmanagement?

Michael asked me to translate the my1Loging Blog Entry I wrote last week into English. Here you go…

What is my1Login?

my1login is your free, online favorites and password manager, providing you with a personal portal to the internet. It can be used to securely store bookmarks for your favourite web sites together with your corresponding login and password details, meaning that wherever you’re accessing the internet from, you’ll only have to remember your my1login to sign-in to all your favourite sites.

So basically, it’s a browser based Version of KeePass or 1Password.

The security focus with my1Login lies on the „KEY” which is used to encrypt the passwords of the different websites and which is independent from the username and password you are using to access the my1Login site. my1Login describes the „KEY” this way:

Your KEY enables your data to be encrypted within your browser using AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), an encryption standard which is so secure that it has been adopted by the US government to secure classified information.

Unfortunately, we don’t know nothing more about the AES implementation they are using. Have they implemented AES themselves – which would make Bruce Schneier rather nervous – and if they are using a Library, they are not disclosing which one. They are also not stating, with what parameters they are operating AES – which can make a big difference.
But even more important then these details is the question how „secure” an AES implementation inside a browser window can be, even if they are implementing features to derail keyloggers and the like. Who is guaranteeing me, that the my1Login JavaScript code is not recording and transmitting my keyphrase to their servers or that the browser is secure and does not have a „bugged” JavaScript engine?
If you want further arguments why JavaScript Cryptography is a bad idea, read JavaScript Cryptography Considered Harmful.

To get the JavaScript code to the browser in a secure way, my1Login is using SSL/TLS (good idea) and certificates from Verisign (not such a good idea). Verisign a) basically belongs to the US government and b) was repeatedly hacked in 2010.

I personally wouldn’t give a rats ass that an security audit performed by Hewlett Packard’s Information Security team confirmed that the my1login service is „robust” and also specifically commented about the high levels of encryption used to provide the service. As long, as nobody is describing to me EXACTLY, what they mean bei „robust”, I would touch that solution with a 10 feet pole. And using „high levels of encryption”, does not mean, that the service is „secure” in any way.

Another thing that bothers me is the fact, that my1Login can automatically log me into services like Facebook or Twitter. This would mean – at least in my understanding – that my1Login needs access to my password for that service. A thing they claim to prevent by using the AES KEY. IMHO, they are contradicting themselves.

There are a few other quirks, like not being able to use valid email-addresses to register (a „+” in the name is valid, a thing they fixed after a tweet from me) or that a registration without JavaScript enabled is not possible.

Personally, I wouldn’t use that service if you would pay me for it.
But if somebody out there is doing a „real” security assessment of my1Login, I would be interested in reading it.

2011-07-16 How Wired Magazine Tried (And Failed) To Help The US Government Frame Julian Assange | WL Central

Why would Wired with-hold this critically important information, unless they were actively co-operating with US agents trying to fabricate charges against Assange? Given that Lamo had notified authorities of Manning’s alleged actions while still continuing to chat with him, it’s logical to assume the Feds would have wanted to censor any published details. Wired appears to have willingly complied. The full transcripts also destroy whatever shreds remain of Adrian Lamo’s tattered reputation. The ex-hacker - who has been described as „the FBI’s star witness against WikiLeaks” - deliberately deceived Manning from the beginning, then lied repeatedly to have the public believe that he didn’t. He claimed to be both a journalist and a minister, repeatedly assuring Manning that their conversations were „never to be published”. Why would Wired redact these portions of the transcripts, expect to maintain the illusion that Lamo is a credible source?

Stephen Wolfram Blog : The Personal Analytics of My Life

One day I’m sure everyone will routinely collect all sorts of data about themselves. But because I’ve been interested in data for a very long time, I started doing this long ago. I actually assumed lots of other people were doing it too, but apparently they were not. And so now I have what is probably one of the world’s largest collections of personal data. Every day—in an effort at “self awareness”—I have automated systems send me a few emails about the day before. But even though I’ve been accumulating data for years—and always meant to analyze it—I’ve never actually gotten around to doing it. But with Mathematica and the automated data analysis capabilities we just released in Wolfram|Alpha Pro, I thought now would be a good time to finally try taking a look—and to use myself as an experimental subject for studying what one might call “personal analytics”.

Programming Is Like Dancing - dan shipper

My theory is this: programming is kind of like dancing. The product isn’t eternal but the moment is. The feeling isn’t lasting but it’s worth chasing. Programming is a state. It’s a way of thinking. Like dancers, we’re never not programmers. We never turn it off. We sit in front of the computer to shape the world around us. As programmers the moments spent coding are the essence of our lives. Patches of memories stitched together by code and hard work.

You could have invented fractional cascading : Inside 233

Fractional cascading is a very useful transformation, used in a variety of contexts including layered range trees and 3D orthogonal range searching. In fact, it can be generalized in several ways. The first is that we can cascade some fixed fraction α of elements, rather than the 1/2 we did here. Additionally, we don’t have to limit ourselves to cascading up a list of arrays; we can cascade up an arbitrary graph, merging many lists together as long as we pick α to be less than 1/d, where d is the in-degree of the node.

Layer 8: New DARPA challenge wants unique algorithms for space applications

The algorithm must enable a satellite to accomplish a feat that’s very difficult to do autonomously: capture a space object that’s tumbling, spinning or moving in the opposite direction, the agency stated.

Allen Wirfs-Brock: ‘JavaScript will be the canonical language for the next 20+ years’

Speaking at QCon London 2012 today, Mozilla Research Fellow Allen Wirfs-Brock laid out what he believes will be the future of the ECMAScript specification. Among the technical details, he included some broader thoughts about the role of JavaScript, predicting that the language will be “the canonical programming language for the next 20+ years.” Wirfs-Brock began with a familiar division of recent computing history into three stages: the ‘business computing’ era, dominated by mainframe systems from firms such as IBM; the ‘personal computing’ era, which was spearheaded by the grand Wintel alliance; and the ‘ambient computing’ era, a brave new browser-based world that has arisen over the past five-to-ten years. He emphasised the crucial foothold that JavaScript already has, and cited Richard Gabriel’s ‘worse is better’ maxim to explain why any young pretender to JS’s client-side crown (cough-Google Dart-cough) is unlikely to succeed.

The TSA has been provided this video in advance of it being made public to give them an opportunity to turn off the scanners and revert to the metal detectors. I personally believe they now have no choice but to turn them off.

The optimizer of IBM® DB2® for Linux®, UNIX®, and Windows® relies on a cost-based design. Using an SQL statement input by a user or application, the optimizer selects an execution plan with the lowest cost to achieve the best performance. If the performance still doesn’t meet requirements after you have used all the best practices for tuning the SQL statement, you can use an optimization profile to guide DB2 to create the execution plan that the user expects. This article explains how to use optimization profiles within DB2 stored procedures.

Social Media Tanja-Anjas

futurebiz schreibt:

Was ist my1login?

my1login is your free, online favorites and password manager, providing you with a personal portal to the internet. It can be used to securely store bookmarks for your favourite web sites together with your corresponding login and password details, meaning that wherever you’re accessing the internet from, you’ll only have to remember your my1login to sign-in to all your favourite sites.

Your KEY enables your data to be encrypted within your browser using AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), an encryption standard which is so secure that it has been adopted by the US government to secure classified information.

Versign a) gehört quasi den USA und b) was repeatedly hacked in 2010.

I personally wouldn’t give a rats ass that an security audit performed by Hewlett Packard’s Information Security teamconfirmed that the my1login service is „robust” and also specifically commented about the high levels of encryption used to provide the service.

BitTorrent Live: Cheap, Real-Time P2P Video Streaming That Will Kill TV | TechCrunch

Television is going the way of the dinosaur, and the deadly comet is called BitTorrent Live. Today, Bram Cohen, the author of the BitTorrent peer-to-peer sharing protocol, demoed his latest creation at the SF MusicTech Summit. BitTorrent Live lets any content owner or publisher stream video to millions of people at good quality and with just a few seconds of latency…for free or cheap. Sports, news events, simulcast TV shows, education, video conferencing, or uncensored war zone broadcasts — this technology will power the future of video.

We, the Web Kids - Pastebin.com

We grew up with the Internet and on the Internet. This is what makes us different; this is what makes the crucial, although surprising from your point of view, difference: we do not ‘surf’ and the internet to us is not a ‘place’ or ‘virtual space’. The Internet to us is not something external to reality but a part of it: an invisible yet constantly present layer intertwined with the physical environment. We do not use the Internet, we live on the Internet and along it. If we were to tell our bildnungsroman to you, the analog, we could say there was a natural Internet aspect to every single experience that has shaped us. We made friends and enemies online, we prepared cribs for tests online, we planned parties and studying sessions online, we fell in love and broke up online. The Web to us is not a technology which we had to learn and which we managed to get a grip of. The Web is a process, happening continuously and continuously transforming before our eyes; with us and through us.
