About time
IBM joins the OpenOffice.org community to develop and promote OpenOffice.org technology
About time, I would say. IBM forked the OpenOffice.org code back in the 1.0 days, when they licensed it under dual licenses, the SISSL and the LGPL. Since then, OpenOffce.org evolved into Version 2.x while IBM kept maintaining their codebase, retrofitting ODF support and fixing bugs.
For OpenOffice.org, this announcement will mean > 30 additional, payed developers and all the code IBM generated in the last years. For IBM, this means that they can incorporate the OpenOffice 2.x code into future versions of their Productivity tools.
I don’t believe in incidents and that the timing of this announcement is purely coincidental with the Notes 8 release, the SUN-IBM deal regarding OpenSolaris and Microsofts failure to buy bribe push the ISO adoption of OOXML. I am still curious, why the announcement is only on the OpenOffice.org website and not on IBMs too. Even Ed has to point to an external website.

Die Propaganda funktioniert
Der Kurier berichtet von der IFA:
Bislang hatte Sony für seine Walkman-Player auf das eigene digitale Format ATRAC („Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding”) gesetzt. Musik in Formaten wie Microsofts WMA (Windows Media Audio) spielten die Player nicht ab.
Durch die Einführung eines offenen Standards vergrößert Sony die Auswahlmöglichkeiten für den Verbraucher und erweitert die Vielseitigkeit der Player”, sagte Jeffry van Ede, Vizepräsident von Sony Europe.
Also MP3, welches von den neuen Walkman unterstützt wird, ist kein offener Standard, Alcatel-Lucent und die Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft/Thomson besitzen jeweils Patente auf Teilverfahren der MP3-Kodierung. Wenn, dann würde die Bezeichung „offener Standard” dem WMA (Windows Media Audio) Format noch eher gerecht werden, da dieses unter dem namen VC-1 auch in freier Software verwendet werden kann. Da Sony Microsofts „PlaysForSure” (außer am Zune von MS) DRM verwendet, ist dies aber auch nicht wahr.
Weiters schreibt der Kurier:
Für Kunden, die eigene CDs gerippt und sich so eine umfangreiche ATRAC-Bibliothek angelegt haben, soll es eine Software zur Umwandlung der Dateien in MP3 geben.
Was die Kollegen hier nicht erwähnen: Die Software kann nur Musik konvertieren, die der Kunde selber von CD gerippt hat. Musik, die er im Connect Online Store gekauft hat, bekommt er aus den Sony-Produkten, die ja nun nachund nach eingestellt werden, NIE WIEDER HERAUS !!!
