Das Ende von FreeS/WAN

Ambitionierte Ziele hatte das FreeS/WAN Projekt. Man wollte den Benutzern mit Opportunistic Encryption (OE) eine Möglichkeit zur Verfügung stellen, ohne weitere Konfiguration eine verschlüsselte Verbindung mit einer Gegenstelle aufzubauen. Diese, in Version 2 von FreeS/WAN integrierte Lösung hat nie die Aufnahme gefunden, die die VPN-Lösung, die bereits in Version 1 implementiert wurde, erfahren hat.
Aus diesem Grund, und weil auch die politischen Ziele, wie etwa die Aufhebung der US-Exportbeschränkungen für Kryptographieprodukte, nicht erreicht wurden, hat Claudia Schmeing im Namen des Linux FreeS/WAN Projects nun einen offenen Abschiedbrief verfasst.
Was in dem Brief allerdings nicht erwähnt wird ist, dass auch die Entscheidung Linus Torvalds, statt FreeS/WAN auf die IPSec-Funktionen der BSD-Welt zu setzen, wohl zu der Einstellung des Projekts geführt haben dürften.
Für den Betrieb einer IPSec-Lösung muss immer der Kernel auch verändert werden. Dieses „Patchen” des Kernels ist vielen zu Aufwendig bzw. verlieren die Anwender bei kommerziellen Distirbutionen damit das Recht auf Support. Daher kam der Entscheidung, welche IPSec Patches im neuen Kernel 2.6 automatisch inkludiert sind, eine große Bedeutung bei.
Nachdem sich Torvalds nun für Kame entschieden hat, kann man davon Ausgehen, dass mit dem Erscheinen der nächsten Versionen der Linux-Distributionen IPSec und VPN mit dieser Lösung und nicht mehr mit FreeS/WAN implementiert werden. Das dürfte einer der Auslöser für die Einstellung des FreeS/WAN Projektes gewesen sein.
