In Unterlagen, die im Rahmen der „Vista Capable” Klage von Microsoft dem Gericht vorgelegt wurden, offenbarte sich eine weitere Blamage für den Softwarekonzern aus Redmond.

In der Hitliste der SW-Hersteller, die für die meisten Abstürze von Windiws Vista im Jahr 2007 verantwortlich waren, belegt die Gates-Company nur den zweiten Platz hinter Grafikkartenhersteller Nvidia. Trotz intimster Kentnisse der Systemarchitektur wurde der Softwareriese von der „kleinen” Bude aus Santa Clara geschlagen.

Ladytron have completed their 4th album ‘Velocifero’ the first for their new label Nettwerk. Release is scheduled for June 3, 2008.

The first song from that record, „Black Cat”, is now avalable for free on their website. It also found it’s way on YouTube.

Eric Idle composed Monty Python’s most famous musical numbers, most notably „Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”, the closing number of Life of Brian, which has grown to become a Python signature tune. He was responsible for the „Galaxy Song” from The Meaning of Life and (with Cleese) „Eric the Half-a-Bee”, a whimsical tune that first appeared on the Monty Python’s Previous Record album.

Mr. Idle turned 65 today.

Das im Dezember verschärfte Sicherheitspolizeigesetz hat einen Anstieg an Handyortungen durch die Polizei ausgelöst, dessen Ausmaß selbst die größten Kritiker noch überrascht. Und der nächste Streich beim Ausbau des Überwachungsstaates steht unmittelbar bevor: Die Vorratsdatenspeicherung wird vermutlich noch im April wieder auf die politische Tagesordnung gelangen, ein Kompromiss zwischen den Regierungsparteien (der im Vorjahr noch scheiterte) gilt als sehr wahrscheinlich.

Vor diesem Hintergrund lädt der Demokratische Salon zu einer Podiumsdiskussion über das Verhältnis von Demokratie und Überwachungsstaat. Denn dass das Gegensätze sind, wird erst zu beweisen sein…

Der EU-Reformvertrag wirkt sich auf viele Lebensbereiche der ÖsterreicherInnen aus. Es gibt daher keinen Grund, die Betroffenen nicht selber über den EU-Reformvertrag entscheiden zu lassen. Deshalb bilden wir am Samstag, 5. April 2008 um 15 Uhr eine Menschenkette rund um das Parlament.
 
Die Plattform Volxabstimmung, der bereits mehr als 50 Organisationen angehören, konzentriert sich auf die Durchsetzung einer Volksabstimmung, nicht auf einzelne Argumente für oder wider den EU-„Reform”-Vertrag. Sie ist überparteilich und fordert alle Parteien auf, ihren demokratischen Verpflichtungen nachzukommen. Gleichzeitig grenzt sie sich gegenüber Parteien und Organisationen ab, welche die Forderung nach Volksabstimmung mit ausländerfeindlichen und nationalistischen Motiven vermengen. Es geht nicht um „uns” ÖsterreicherInnen gegen „die EU”, sondern um eine demokratische Grundlage für ein solidarisches und friedliches Zusammenleben aller Menschen in Europa.

Das SANS Institute warnt vor einem Exploit, der bereits über 100.000 legitime Webseiten befallen hat, die auf Microsofts ASP-Technologien beruhen. Der Exploit nutzt die von Microsoft in MS06-014 MS07-004, MS06-067, MS06-057 beschriebenen Bugs.

Der Exploit installiert auf den verseuchten Seiten einen Javascript-Link auf 2117966.net und versucht dort, Passwörter für andere Websiten und Online-Spiele zu ergattern.

We’ve decided that IE8 will, by default, interpret web content in the most standards compliant way it can. This decision is a change from what we’ve posted previously.
 
Microsoft recently published a set of Interoperability Principles. Thinking about IE8’s behavior with these principles in mind, interpreting web content in the most standards compliant way possible is a better thing to do.
 
We think that acting in accordance with principles is important, and IE8’s default is a demonstration of the interoperability principles in action. While we do not believe any current legal requirements would dictate which rendering mode a browser must use, this step clearly removes this question as a potential legal and regulatory issue. As stated above, we think it’s the better choice.

YES !!! I knew they will learn sometimes. That decision will probably the only real reason ever to upgrade everybody to IE8. ;)

Dear MS-centric web developers, PLEASE read up on the current W3C standards, you will probably need them.

Microsoft doing „the right thing”® for once. Only took them seven releases.

Die Wachstumsprognose für 2008 lautet: plus 42 Prozent oder ein Gesamtvolumen von 180 Millionen Euro. Damit wird - wenn Plakat und Außenwerbung wie 2007 stagnieren - Online zum drittgrößten Werbeträger nach Print und TV aufsteigen.

Cool! Da sollte ich doch einige meiner Online-Pläne endlich verwirklichen – die könnten sich langsam auszahlen.

Dann gabs aber auch noch diese Meldung:

Glaubt man dem aktuellen Bericht des Marktforschungsunternehmens comScore könnten sich abflauende Klickraten seitens der Nutzer stärker auf das Werbesegment auswirken, als bislang angenommen. Im Januar waren die bezahlten Klickraten bei dem Branchenriesen Google erstmals rückläufig, wie aus der Erhebung hervorgeht. Nach Bekanntgabe der Daten gab auch die Google-Aktie um acht Prozent nach. Einige Experten sprechen nun bereits vom Ende des Online-Werbebooms.

Notes to self: If (re)installing ActiveState Perl on Windows, do not forget to install „libnet” via ppm. Otherwise ASCII-uploads via Net::FTP will not work – apparently due to a b0rken version of Net::FTP included in the install.

P.S.: ActivePerl 5.10 is IMHO not a recommended install yet - lots of modules still missing for that release.

One year after the release of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 alias ‘etch’ and nearly three years after the release of Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 alias ‘sarge’ the security support for the old distribution (3.1 alias ‘sarge’) is coming to an end next month. The Debian project is proud to be able to support its old distribution for such a long time and even for one year after a new version has been released.

Recently, I upgraded my ancient FileZilla Version 2.2.32 to the recent 3.0.7.1 build. Unfortunately, FileZilla did not migrate my site information to the new version and did not deinstall the old one.

I don’t quite get it, why I have to manually export and import the data into the new version, although this would/should be possible automatically.
