CrowdStrike: What was the impact of the global IT outage

GPs couldn’t treat patients, people were stranded as planes couldn’t get off the ground, and small businesses lost much-needed sales.

Two months on from the global IT outage on 19 July, its full impact is only now becoming apparent.

A rogue software update by the US cybersecurity company CrowdStrike crippled up to eight and half million computers using Microsoft systems around the world.

Adam Meyers - a senior executive at CrowdStrike - will testify at the US Congress on Tuesday.

He will speak of being "deeply sorry" about what happened, and his company’s determination to "prevent it from happening again."

Notfallkommunikation ist mehr als eine SMS

Seit 9. September 2024 ist das neue Bevölkerungswarnsystem AT-Alert im Probebetrieb. Via „Cell-Broadcast” können Personen in Gefahrengebieten gezielt und anonym mit wichtigen Informationen versorgt werden.

Und keinen Tag zu Früh. In der aktuellen Wettersituation über Österreich kam der „AT-Alert” (ich hätte ihn ja mit AT-AT abgekürzt ;) ) bereits zum Einsatz. @bin_da@mastodontech.de hat solch eine Meldung auf Twitter publiziert:

In dieser SMS wird auf die Homepage der Feuerwehr Krems verwiesen, nicht aber auf Radio, etc. Oh well. Zumindest dürfte deren Server im Rechenzentrum des NÖ Landesfeuerwehrverbandes stehen und entsprechend professionell betrieben werden. Soweit, so gut.

Auf der Seite der Feuerwehr Krems wird dann für interessierte weiter verlinkt:

Und hier wirds grauslich. Zivilschutz.at ist die Seite des Österreichischen Zivilschutzverbandes. Dieser VEREIN ist laut eigenen Angaben keine operativ tätige Einsatzorganisation, sondern eine Organisation, deren Hauptaufgabe nach Eigenangaben in der Information der Bevölkerung liegt. Der ÖZSV – Bundesverband ist hier als „verlängerter Arm des BMI” tätig und gibt diese Selbstschutzinformationen auf mehrere Ebenen an die Bevölkerung weiter.
Während das Bundesministerum für Inneres mit seiner .gv.at Adresse online ist und eigentlich alle Zivilschutzinformationen bereit stellen sollte, ist die Seite des Österreichischen Zivilschutzverbandes, https://www.zivilschutz.at/, (keine .gv.at Adresse, weil es ist ja ein Verein) offline:

Der Verein, der als „verlängerter Arm des BMI” agiert, hostet seine Homepage mit den Selbschutzinformationen, auf welche die Feuerwehren verweisea, bei World4You, einem Provider, der in der Szene nicht den besten Ruf bezgl. Stabilität und Servicequalität hat. Die Homepage liegt also nicht beim BMI, wird nicht im BRZ gehostet und vermutlich die meisten Feuerwehren verweisen auf diesen Verein, weil er ja im Namen des BMI agiert.

Im Vorstand des Vereins finden sich Andreas Hanger (ÖVP), Michael Hammer (ÖVP) und Erwin Preiner (SPÖ), die alle noch neben ihrer Tätigkeit als Nationalratsabgeordnete Zeit finden, den Vereinszweck voran zu treiben. Bewundernswert.

Es zeigt sich halt erneut, dass das Gegenteil von „gut gemacht” halt immer noch „gut gmeint” ist. Notfallkommunikation ist mehr als nur ein AT-AT System das SMS versenden kann. Kommunikation ist schwierig, aber wichtige Webseiten hochverfügbar zu machen ist ein Problem das in der IT generell als gelöst bettrachtet werden kann. Selbst beim IT-Dienstleister des Bundes, dem Bundesrechenzentrum, kann man das, dort allerdings zu Apothekenpreisen, beziehen.

Wenn die aktuelle Wettersituation (die ja laut ÖVP und FPÖ „NICHTS!!!!” mit der Klimakatastrophe zu tun hat), vorbei ist, werden ich mal den NÖ Landesfeuerwehrverband zu dem Thema kontaktieren. Eventuell finden die dann ja ein besseres Linkziel.

Saving Voyager 1! - Bruce Waggoner at !!Con 2024

Both of the 47 year old Voyager spacecraft are currently in interstellar space and returning their most important data set; in-situ measurements of the magnetic field, plasma and dust beyond the Heliopause. In late 2023, Voyager 1 lost all downlink telemetry and the flight team had essentially no visibility into the state of the spacecraft which is over 15 billion miles from the Earth. This talk will detail how the flight team diagnosed the problem, and formulated a recovery plan to patch the Flight Data System flight software.

Bruce Waggoner is the Mission Assurance Manager at NASA Jet Propulsion Lab/Caltech. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a BS in Physics and Astronomy. He has worked at JPL for 39 years supporting dozens of Earth orbiting and deep space missions.

Why A.I. Isn’t Going to Make Art

"The selling point of generative A.I. is that these programs generate vastly more than you put into them, and that is precisely what prevents them from being effective tools for artists.

Many novelists have had the experience of being approached by someone convinced that they have a great idea for a novel, which they are willing to share in exchange for a fifty-fifty split of the proceeds. Such a person inadvertently reveals that they think formulating sentences is a nuisance rather than a fundamental part of storytelling in prose. Generative A.I. appeals to people who think they can express themselves in a medium without actually working in that medium. But the creators of traditional novels, paintings, and films are drawn to those art forms because they see the unique expressive potential that each medium affords. It is their eagerness to take full advantage of those potentialities that makes their work satisfying, whether as entertainment or as art.
