Wrong assumption: "AI code generators are like compilers for translating natural language into a programming language"

"AI code generators are like compilers for translating natural language into a programming language" – I have heard and read this unfitting analogy quite a few times already.
It is misleading, as it sweeps a crucial technical point under the carpet and downplays some of the more serious consequences for people who have to deal with AI-generated code.

Compilers are deterministic, usually generating functionally equivalent code for a given input program on every run, according to language specifications.
Programmers usually do not have to check the machine code or the assembly code a native compiler generates, as its behavior is well-specified and, with mature compilers, also well-tested.
Programmers can expect the compiler to "just work", transforming code that is comparatively easy to read and write for humans into a form that is simpler for the machine to process, but difficult to read for humans.
Also, assuming the input code is written in a standardized language and uses its features in a well-defined way, switching compilers is relatively easy.

Yes, AI code generators also transform something that is easier to read – in this case natural language – into something that is simpler for the machine to process – in this case program code.
However, this is where the similarity ends.
The path from given prompt input to output code is practically inscrutable, warranting a lot more skepticism about the result.
In the general case, can you expect to get functionally equivalent code with the same prompts every time? No!
Can you even expect correct output? No!

Writing a Demoscene Intro for the ZX Spectrum - markround.com

I’m now the proud author of a hand-rolled retro demoscene intro that runs on a stock 128Kb Spectrum. It features all those late 80s tropes: A smooth scrolltext (with ‘leet custom fonts!), a three-channel AY soundtrack, bouncing VU meters and the essential parallax starfield. It’s currently 10287 bytes of code, or 19552 bytes as a complete tape image - which, given I’ve been working on this since December 13th last year, means my average rate of code-production is a paltry ~ 455 bytes per week!

This blog post is a technical overview of how I got there, some cool tricks I picked up, and everything I had to learn (and re-learn) about the Speccy and Z80 assembly along the way.

You Keep Using That Word I Do Not Think It Means What You Think It Means meme

liest, meint mein Kopf unmittelbar „führendes, weil Einziges”.

Der Städtebund liefert verlässlich regelmäßig sehr lustige „IT”-Meldungen.

Oder, um es mit Nena zu sagen:

Ich glaub’ wir sind schon ziemlich weit
Ich kann den Leuchtturm nicht mehr sehen

Zero-Width-Space

Weencourageyoutoreviewyourchoicescarefully…

Erm, actually 🤓☝️ it's MICROSOFT LinkedIn

PSA, as I still meet people who have not realized this:

June 13, 2016 – Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn:

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) and LinkedIn Corporation (NYSE: LNKD) on Monday announced they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire LinkedIn for $196 per share in an all-cash transaction valued at $26.2 billion, inclusive of LinkedIn’s net cash.

Which brought us features like this:

You can see LinkedIn information on profile cards across Microsoft 365 apps, such as Outlook, OneDrive for Business, and SharePoint. Some public LinkedIn information, like a person’s photo and job title, may show even before you connect your accounts.
