Linksys WRT54GS, DD-WRT and Bittorrent
Replacing our vintage and borken Asus WL-500 (yes, without w/a/b/g/…) with a Linksys WRT54GS, I ran into troubles regarding Bittorrent, WoW and HTTP traffic. Webpages wouldn’t load and timeout all the time, as Bittorrent was taking up all the bandwith.
Reading all available manuals and using Google to search for tips (you shouldn’t just „google” for it ;) fixing the bandwith problems was actually quite easy.
First of all, I set up the „Quality of Service” settings in the DD-WRT Control Panel. As we use „kabel@net speed”, it’s 512 kbps up- and 5120 kbps download speed.
I then prioritized traffic according to our needs (fast WoW and http, BitTorrent as Bulk).
Unfortunately, that didn’t help as much as I hoped. Websites still timed out. After a little digging, I found a tip that solved the http timeouts.
What you have to change is the „IP Filter Settings (adjust these for P2P)” in the Admin-Settings of the DD-WRT Control Panel. I set the „Maximum Ports” to 4096 and the timeouts to 90 and everything was fine. And no, you don’t have to do this on the console as some „tips” claim.
All in all, the Linksys WRT54GS rules. GREBA!
