Im Jahr 2004 sehnte sich Juan Mann nach seiner Rückkehr nach Australien nach einer Umarmung. Er wurde aber von niemandem erwartet und in Empfang genommen. Um anderen Menschen in ähnlichen Situationen zu helfen, begann Mann sich mit einem Schild in die Fußgängerzone zu stellen, auf dem „Free Hugs” stand.

Free Hugs is awesome! I know quite a few active campaigners myself (one of them has been traveling for quite a while now, organizing campaigns wherever he goes). Actually last Saturday when we brought a friend to the airport we got some cardboard from the supermarket, improvised free hugs signs and went to the arrivals after saying goodbye to our friend. :)
