Microsoft is seeking to get five million Lotus Notes customers to make the switch to Microsoft’s collaboration tools in its fiscal 2009 year, according to Kevin Turner, COO for the software giant. … „This past year we sold in 4.86 million seats of our collaboration solution – SharePoint, Exchange and Office – into IBM Lotus Notes accounts,” Turner went on about Microsoft’s success in the historical messaging and collaboration battle it has fought with IBM and Lotus.
 
„If you take the last two years, we have sold in eight million seats. This next year I have a goal for the [sales] field that is more than five million seats,” he said.

Nach diesem Artikel in Network World war es klar, dass es nur eine Frage der Zeit ist, bis man auch in Österreich erste Anzeichen davon merkt, dass MS wieder mal auf den „Groupware”-Busch klopft.

Meine Enttäuschung war dann aber groß, als ich auf den Blog-Eintrag „Warum Exchange besser ist als Lotus Notes” von Christian Decker gestoßen bin. Wobei ich die Links zu den tollen Referenzen und den von MS in Auftrag gegebenen Studien noch am Besten fand – die funktionieren nämlich allesamt nicht.

Sg. Hr. Decker, „http://null/redir.aspx?…” mag eventuell unter Umständen manchmal noch innerhalb der Microsoft funktionieren, aber sicherlich nicht im Internet.

Mit gutem Grund wird in dem Text auch auf die IDC Studie von 2005 verwiesen, weil 2006 liest sich das so:

Notes/Domino increased its share of the integrated collaborative environments market last year to 40 percent, up from 39 percent in 2005. Outlook/Exchange’s share of the $2.4 billion market slipped to 51 percent from 53 percent over that same period.

Und auch sonst findet sich inhaltlich nicht viel überzeugendes auf der Seite. Es ist halt argumentativ schwierig, einen Mailserver als Groupwareplattform zu verkaufen und dann auch noch gegen eine echte Groupwareplattform anzutreten. Aber bei einem Ziel von 5 Mio. Lizenzen hätte ich mir schon ein wenig mehr Mühe erwartet. Und nicht u.a. Verweise auf Referenzen aus dem Jahre 2003.

Besondere Lachnummer für mich: „Cluster Continuous Replication”. Ein Feature, das mit Exchange 2007 neu dazu kam. „Shared nothing” Cluster gibts in Notes seit Version 4.5 (1996).
Wobei man bei Notes den/die Clusterpartner auf anderen OSen betreiben UND aktiv zum Load-Blancing verwenden kann, während bei Exchange der zweite (kein dritter möglich?) Node bei der „Cluster Continuous Replication” passiv betrieben werden muss (also nichts tut), wenn ich die MS-Doku richtig gelesen habe.

Aber das sind Details. Wen es interessiert, der kann mich ja anmailen, antwittern oder anjabbern. Ich plauder gern darüber.
