Lenovo ThinkVantage „Rescue and Recovery” won't backup when running under Vista
As I bought myself a new 1 TB USB disk, I wanted to create a backup of my Thinkpad T43p. Unfortunately everytime I started Lenovos ThinkVantage tool „Rescue and Recovery” it did some work and finished with „Backup could not be completed”.
After some time spent reinstalling RnR and applying the latest „Rescue and Recovery 4.2 patch for Windows XP, Vista and Vista Service Pack 1” I still couldn’t get by backup running. Eventually, I took a look into the Windows Event Viewer (Start -> Execute -> eventvwr.msc). Every time I tried to start the backup, the Application Event Log registered the message „The ‘Microsoft-Volume-Shadow-Copy’ service is deaktivated”.
As I am not a fan of Microsofts Volume Shadow Copy Service (I need my harddisk space for data, not for backups), I had deactivated the service. Unfortunately, Lenovo does not document anywhere, that RnR needs the Volume Shadoy Copy Service to work.
So I actived the Service and voila, „Rescue and Recovery” is happily backing up my harddisk, as I write this.
