The Software I Use (On Windows)

As I am FINALLY upgrading from Vista to XP (and probably to Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 ‘Lenny’ after I checked a few things), I made myself a list of all the software I more or less use every day on a Windows box, so I know what to install again. Maybe you will find it useful too.

The Software I Use
AudacityAudacity is a digital audio editor and recording application. Audacity is cross-platform and is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and BSD.
Azureus/VuzeAzureus is a BitTorrent client written in Java. The BitTorrent protocol is a new way of exchanging or distributing data over the internet. Downloading also means uploading, and the amounts of each are linked, to ensure fairness and rapidity in the spread of the file at hand.
BlogBridgeBlogBridge is an open source Java-based feed aggregator. It is described on the BlogBridge web site as „”a powerful blog and feed reader”„. BlogBridge is aimed for those people who are subscribed to many feeds, including journalists, PR professionals and OPML enthusiasts.
CdexCDex can extract the data directly (digital) from an Audio CD, which is generally called a CD Ripper or a CDDA utility. The resulting audio file can be a plain WAV file (useful for making compilation audio CDs) or the ripped audio data can be compressed using an audio encoder.
DVD DecrypterDVD Decrypter is a software application that can create backup disc images of the DVD-Video structure of DVDs. It can be used to image any DVD, but controversially it is especially useful for decrypting copy-protected movies. The program can also burn images to disc. CSS decrypting software (such as DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD) allows a region-specific DVD to be copied as an all-region DVD. It also removes Macrovision, Content Scrambling System (CSS), region codes, and user operation prohibition.
DVD FlickDVD Flick aims to be a simple but at the same time powerful DVD Authoring tool. It can take a number of video files stored on your computer and turn them into a DVD that will play back on your DVD player, Media Center or Home Cinema Set. You can add additional custom audio tracks, subtitles as well as a menu for easier navigation.
DVDShrinkDVD Shrink is a freeware program for Microsoft Windows that facilitates backing up DVD movies. As commercially-released video DVDs are typically dual layer (8.5 GB), one of DVD Shrink’s functions is to re-encode the movie in lesser quality and/or discard extra content such as foreign-language soundtracks so as to fit on a single layer (4.7 GB) DVD.
EraserEraser is a secure data removal tool, which allows you to remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it with carefully selected patterns.
FileZillaFileZilla Client is a fast and reliable cross-platform FTP, FTPS and SFTP client with lots of useful features and an intuitive graphical user interface.
FLACFLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio, and you can play back compressed FLAC files in your favorite player (or your car or home stereo, see supported devices) just like you would an MP3 file.
FlashGetFlashGet is a leading download manager and has the highest amount of users on the internet. It uses MHT(Multi-server Hyper-threading Transportation) technique, supports various protocols and has excellent document management features. FlashGet is a freeware without any adware or spyware.
FLV PlayerFLV Player is a program to play Adobe Flash Video (FLV and H.264 / MPEG-4) files with. It is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista, supports both local and internet streaming content, has full screen mode and, best of all, it’s free.
Foxit ReaderFoxit Reader is a free PDF document viewer, with incredible small size, breezing-fast launch speed and rich feature set. Foxit Reader supports Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista. Its core function is compatible with PDF Standard 1.7.
Free Burn MP3-CDFree Burn MP3-CD is an easy-to-use audio CD burning tool. It can convert MP3, WMA, WAV & OGG files to audio CD, so that you can enjoy them on your home, car stereo or portable CD player. Download it and make custom CDs out of your MP3s in minutes with your CD-R/RW drive.
FreeCommanderFreeCommander is a freeware Orthodox File Manager (OFM) for Windows (2000, XP and Vista are officially supported). Some features include a built-in FTP client, archive file navigation, folder comparison / synchronization, and a multi-rename tool.
FreeMindFreeMind is a free mind-mapping software written in Java.

GeoSetter for WindowsGeoSetter is a freeware tool for Windows for showing and changing geo data of image files (e.g. images taken by digital cameras).
GhostscriptGhostscript is the name of a set of software that provides: An interpreter for the PostScript (TM) language and the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF – sometimes confused with Acrobat, Adobe’s PDF browser/editor product), and a set of C procedures (the Ghostscript library) that implement the graphics and filtering (data compression / decompression / conversion) capabilities that appear as primitive operations in the PostScript language and in PDF.
GNU Privacy GuardGnuPG is the GNU project’s complete and free implementation of the OpenPGP standard as defined by RFC4880 . GnuPG allows to encrypt and sign your data and communication, features a versatile key managment system as well as access modules for all kind of public key directories. GnuPG, also known as GPG, is a command line tool with features for easy integration with other applications. A wealth of frontend applications and libraries are available. Version 2 of GnuPG also provides support for S/MIME.
GnuWin32The GnuWin32 project provides Win32-versions of GNU tools, or tools with a similar open source licence. The ports are native ports, that is they rely only on libraries provided with any standard 32-bits MS-Windows operating system, such as MS-Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT / 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista. Native ports do not rely on some kind of Unix emulation, such as CygWin or Msys, so that there is no need to install additional emulation libraries.
GoogleEarthGoogle Earth is a virtual globe, map and geographic information program that was originally called Earth Viewer, and was created by Keyhole, Inc, a company acquired by Google in 2004. It maps the Earth by the superimposition of images obtained from satellite imagery, aerial photography and GIS 3D globe.
GspotGSpot is a free utility which identifies the codec required to play an AVI file and supplies other information as well.
GsviewGSview is a graphical interface for Ghostscript. Ghostscript is an interpreter for the PostScript page description language used by laser printers. For documents following the Adobe PostScript Document Structuring Conventions, GSview allows selected pages to be viewed or printed.
ImageMagickImageMagick is an open source[1] software suite for image manipulation and display, supporting close to 100 image formats. It is mainly used to perform various transformation and conversion operations on images.
ImgBurnImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit!
IrfanViewIrfanView is a freeware image viewer for Microsoft Windows that can view, edit, and convert image files and play video/audio formats. It does not have extensive image creation and painting capabilities like Adobe Photoshop, Pixel image editor, Paint.NET or GIMP. Rather, IrfanView is designed to be a lightweight viewer/player which is noted for its speed, ease of use, and ability to handle a wide variety of graphic file formats.
iTagiTag is a free tool that adds title, description and keyword tags to your photos and movies. The captions you enter are embedded into each file using industry standard IPTC and XMP headers - all in a lossless operation that doesn’t degrade the image.
JkDefragGUIJkDefragGUI is an Graphical User Interface which allows you to easily select all the features JkDefrag, a freeware defragmentation tool made by Jeroen Kessels has to offer. But is can do a lot more. JkDefragGUI can schedule a defragmentation, install JkDefrag or it’s screensaver but can also do some small maintenance to your computer. It can be used to schedule a defragmentation of your system files like pagefile and registry files. JkDefragGUI also supports CCleaner which can be used instead of the internal cleaning function.
LevelatorThe Levelator is a free application developed by GigaVox Media, Inc. in 2005 (unveiled to the public at the first Podcast and New Media Expo). Developed by Bruce Sharpe and his son Malcolm, the Levelator adjusts the audio levels within an audio segment as opposed to traditional compression, normalization and limiting. It creates a new copy of the audio sample which has balanced levels and a standard overall volume.
Lotus NotesLotus Notes is a client-server, collaborative application developed and sold by IBM Software Group. IBM defines the software as an ‘integrated desktop client option for accessing business e-mail, calendars and applications on [an] IBM Lotus Domino server.’.
MagicDiscMagicDisc is freeware. It is very helpful utility designed for creating and managing virtual CD drives and CD/DVD discs. MagicDisc allows you to use almost all CD/DVD image without burning them onto CD or DVD
Mozilla FirefoxThe Firefox Web Browser is the faster, more secure, and fully customizable way to surf the web.
Mp3tagMp3tag is a powerful and yet easy-to-use tool to edit metadata (ID3, Vorbis Comments and APE) of common audio formats. It can rename files based on the tag information, replace characters or words from tags and filenames, import/export tag information, create playlists and more. The program supports online freedb database lookups for selected files, allowing you to automatically gather proper tag information for select files or CDs. (OO.o or OOo), commonly known simply as OpenOffice, is an office application suite available for a number of different computer operating systems. It is distributed as free software. It supports the ISO/IEC standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office formats among others.
Paint.NetPaint.NET is a raster graphics editing program for Microsoft Windows, developed on the .NET Framework. Originally created as a Washington State University student project, Paint.NET has evolved from a simple replacement for the Microsoft Paint program, which is included with Windows, into a powerful editor with support for layers, blending, transparency, and plugins.
Pegasus MailPegasus Mail is a free, standards-based electronic mail client suitable for use by single or multiple users on single computers or on local area networks. A proven product, it has served millions of users since it was released in 1990. It is extremely feature-rich and powerful, yet remains small and fast.
PerlIn computer programming, Perl is a high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming language. Perl was originally developed by Larry Wall, a linguist working as a systems administrator for NASA, in 1987, as a general purpose Unix scripting language to make report processing easier. Since then, it has undergone many changes and revisions and become widely popular among programmers. Larry Wall continues to oversee development of the core language, and its coming version, Perl 6.
PkZipPKZIP is the industry-leading security and compression utility that zips and unzips files, greatly reducing transmission times and required storage space. PKZIP allows you to exchange data with a wide variety of systems including mainframe, midrange, server and desktop systems.
PuTTYPuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator.

QDPGPQDPGP is a PGP plugin for Pegasus Mail.
SkypeSkype is software that allows users to make telephone calls over the Internet. Calls to other users of the service and to free-of-charge numbers are free, while calls to other landlines and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Additional features include instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing.
TightVNCTightVNC is a free remote control software package derived from the popular VNC software. With TightVNC, you can see the desktop of a remote machine and control it with your local mouse and keyboard, just like you would do it sitting in the front of that computer.

TkabberTkabber is a GPL instant messaging client for the Jabber (XMPP) protocol which uses the Tk toolkit for the GUI. It runs on anything to which Tcl/Tk is ported: almost any X-based system (namely, any Linux and *BSD, Solaris, etc), Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X.
TrueCryptTrueCrypt is a software application used for real-time on-the-fly encryption. It can create a virtual encrypted disk within a file or a device-hosted encrypted volume on either an individual partition or an entire storage device. It supports Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and encrypted volumes can be made portable. The version for Windows Vista or XP can encrypt the boot partition or entire boot drive and has the ability to create and run a hidden encrypted operating system whose existence is deniable.
VideoLAN - VLC media playerVideoLAN is a project that develops software for playing video and other media formats. It originally developed two programs for media streaming – VideoLAN Client (VLC) and VideoLAN Server (VLS) – but most of the features of VLS have been incorporated in to VLC, with the result renamed VLC media player.
VimVim is a text editor first released by Bram Moolenaar in 1991 for the Amiga computer. The name „”Vim”” is an acronym for „”Vi IMproved”” because Vim was created as an extended version of the vi editor, with many additional features designed to be helpful in editing program source code. While Vim is cross-platform, it is most popular on Unix-like operating systems.
WinAmpWinamp is a proprietary media player written by Nullsoft, now a subsidiary of Time Warner. It is skinnable, multi-format freeware/shareware.
WinSCPWinSCP (Windows Secure CoPy) is an open source SFTP and FTP client for Microsoft Windows. Its main function is secure file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers basic file manager and file synchronization functionality. For secure transfers, it uses Secure Shell (SSH) and supports the SCP protocol in addition to SFTP.

Welche Windows-Distribution verwendest du? Nicht sag du installierst das alles von Hand!

For playing H.264 and FLV's i use mplayer. For win32 exist a nice installer for the mplayer including a nice gui.

It's also free, but as free speech :-)

Wozu FLAC und FLV Player? Kann doch der VLC eh schon. Oder gibt es einen speziellen Grund dafr?

Ah, gut, da waren ein paar mir unbekannte, aber sehr nette Sachen dabei! Danke!

@Stepan: Ja, hndisch. Aber ab jetzt gibts ein Image, das nur mehr zurckgespielt wird.

@digitreo: VLC hat bei manchen FLVs Probleme beim Vor- und Zurckspulen. Das macht der FLAC besser.

Und das ganze System ist um EINIGES flotter als Vista. Da macht arbeiten wieder Spa. Ich freu mich schon auf Debian.

Na gut bei der Liste sollte der Debian Umstieg ja durchaus problemlos gelingen.
