In a research project conducted during last year’s holiday season and posted on YouTube, Bill Hammack, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, concluded that a single-file line leading to three cashiers is about three times faster than having a separate line for each cashier. Any delay in the multiple-line system will stop the line completely, while a delay in a single line might just delay one shopper. Although the single-line method may be faster, Mr. Hammack says customers generally prefer to „jockey for position” in separate lines.

Der EU-Rat hat heute während einer Sitzung des Fischereiausschusses den Beitritt zum ACTA-Abkommen beschlossen. Am Wochenende will die EU das umstrittene Abkommen bei einem Treffen der WTO in Genf unterzeichnen. ACTA soll einen neuen “goldenen Standard” für den weltweiten Kampf gegen Produktpiraterie und Urheberrechtsverletzungen im Netz schaffen und wurde von 39 Staaten geheim verhandelt. Die einzelnen Bestimmungen des Texts sind so vage gehalten, dass sie Grundrechte einschränken und zu einer privatisierten Zensur im Internet führen werden. Das Abkommen schafft zudem neue strafrechtliche Sanktionen, die nicht nur erhebliche Auswirkungen auf die Meinungsfreiheit, den Zugang zu Kultur und den Datenschutz haben werden, sondern auch dem internationalen Handel schaden und Innovation lähmen werden.
