ISO updates C standard - The H Open Source: News and Features

The standard, now referred to informally as C11, provides greater compatibility with the C++ language and adds new features to C (as indicated in the draft). Those features include multi-threading, Unicode support based on the ISO/IEC TR 19769:2004 specification, additional macros for querying the characteristics of floating point types and the ability to use static assertions. The recently released revision also standardises many of the features that current compilers already support, as required by the draft.

As Alan Kay, a major pioneer of today’s software-eaten planet, pointed out recently, the Internet doesn’t have stop, shut down, or rewind buttons. Once it was turned on, history was essentially rebooted. Software began eating away at the pre-software layers of civilization on the planet, and depositing software-infused layers instead. One of these days, we’ll recognize the enormous significance of what’s going on and replace the BC/AD distinction with BI/AI (Before Internet/After Internet), with January 1, Year 0 reset to October 29, 1969, the day the Internet was turned on (if you want to start right, 2012 is actually Year 43, AI). And yes, this time, there will be a Year 0, if programmers have anything to do with it.

Über so vieles in Ihrem Artikel möchte ich mich noch empören. Zum Beispiel die Unterstellung, dass Männern Beleidigung, Belästigung und Gewalt Spaß machen. Mit solchen sexistischen Äußerungen erreichen wir sicher ein besseres Miteinander der Geschlechter! Es ist auch eine Unverschämtheit, wenn Sie intensiven Internetnutzern (anscheinend nur Männer) besonders negative Eigentschaften unterstellen und annehmen, dass die Piratenpartei einen Querschnitt dieser Gruppe darstellt. Sie werden verstehen, dass die feminstische Arbeit bei den Piraten zuweilen frustrierend ist, wenn einem die Medien und selbst die EMMA in den Rücken fallen. Auf differenzierte Darstellungen in der Presse warten wir also weiter vergeblich. Schade!

The trailer for The Hobbit features singing dwarves. And not just one or two, but thirteen. Thirteen named characters! Singing! Can you imagine any other genre film targeted toward an adult audience getting the greenlight to (a) be allowed to have thirteen named characters in a trailer and (b) have them sing? I think not. It was that part of the trailer — the singing — that caught me. I sense confidence from the studios involved. Good for them. They’ll be rewarded for it when the box office numbers are tallied.

Denn egal wie absurd es wird, der Datenschützer und die Datenschützerin wissen immer wie es weitergeht. Wir müssen uns die Datenschützer als glückliche Menschen vorstellen.

Großdemonstration in Moskau: Russlands Erwachen - SPIEGEL ONLINE - Nachrichten - Politik

Rund 50.000 Mann hat das russische Innenministerium im Moskauer Stadtzentrum für die Demonstration aufmarschieren lassen. Helikopter kreisen über dem Platz. Der Kreml behält gern den Überblick. Über den Köpfen der Demonstranten aber surren noch andere Flugobjekte: fußballgroße und mit Kameras ausgestattete Drohnen. Nicht Russlands Inlandsgeheimdienst FSB setzt sie ein, um die Rebellen zu überwachen, sondern russische Blogger. Sie übertragen die Luftaufnahmen von der Demo live ins Internet, weil das staatlich kontrollierte Fernsehen Berichte über Kundgebungen der Opposition bislang stets totschwieg.

Ihr habt ja sicher auch gehört, dass die Vorratsdatenspeicherung ja jetzt unbedingt ganz dringend eingeführt werden muss, weil, äh, also, uh, naja, das ist halt eine EU-Richtlinie, und wenn wir die nicht sofort umsetzen, dann müssen wir Strafe zahlen. Das wird euch jetzt sicher genau so überraschen wie mich: stimmt gar nicht, sagt unsere Justizministerin. Die FDP-Politikerin widersprach der Behauptungen aus der Union, bei Nichtumsetzen der EU-Richtlinie zur Vorratsdatenspeicherung drohten Strafzahlungen ab Ende Dezember.

gVim, UTF-8 and Shell Scripts

Ever got the message ./x.bash: line 1: #!/bin/bash: No such file or directory?

I did. And wondered why. After some googling and hex viewer searching, I found the culprit. The BOM.
The byte order mark (BOM) is a Unicode character used to signal the endianness (byte order) of a text file or stream.

As this is optional, I just removed the set bomb from my .vimrc and „suddenly” my shell scripts work without an error. :)

Hardcover plus E-Book: Nur Buch, das gibt’s nicht mehr? - Bücher - FAZ

die Bücher, die Rogner & Bernhard und Haffmans & Tolkemitt als Hardcover Plus anbieten, sind trotz der zusätzlichen Download-Option keineswegs teurer, sondern werden zum herkömmlichen Preis angeboten. Verleger Till Tolkemitt vertritt den Standpunkt, dass E-Books heutzutage bei der Buchproduktion ohnehin automatisch mithergestellt werden, aber eben keine Papier-, Druck- oder Vertriebskosten verursachen, die an den Kunden weitergegeben werden müssten - was ignoriert, dass Autor und Verlag dennoch auch an diesem Vertriebsweg verdienen müssen, wenn die Standards gehalten werden sollen. Auf Dauer will Tolkemitt Titel darum entweder als Buch plus E-Book anbieten - oder aber als reines E-Book, das dann 25 Prozent günstiger ist als das gedruckte Exemplar. Das „Nur“-Buch werde es nicht mehr geben, so Tolkemitt.

Netzpolitik und die Grüninnen -- Aufbruch in Deutschland, Winterschlaf in Österreich

Offensichtlich getrieben durch die ersten Erfolge der Piratenpartei in Berlin hat das Bündnis 90/Die Grünen in Deutschland einen recht interessanten Antrag zur Netzpolitik gestellt.

Leider ist die Piratenpartei in Österreich so mit sich selbst und internen Streiterein beschäftigt, dass sie bei diesem Thema die österreichischen Grüninnen nicht vor sich her treiben.

Das Letzte, was mir von den Grüninnen zum Thema Netzpolitik in Erinnerung blieb, war der patscherte Umgang mit der Netzinitiative „Grüne Vorwahlen” und die grandiose Forderung der oberöstereichischen Grüninnen nach DNS-Sperren/Internetzensur.

In einem Statement zur Verleihung der Big Brother Awards 2009 für die Unterstützung der Internetzensur schrieb Pressereferent Markus Gusenbauer damals:

Wir Grünen OÖ nehmen die geäußerte Kritik jedoch sehr ernst und werden daher noch im November die Arbeit in der Gruppe „Netzpolitik“ starten. Mit ExpertInnen aus den verschiedensten Bereichen wollen wir Fachwissen in diesem Bereich aufbauen und klare Positionen erarbeiten.

Hat man von dieser Gruppe jemals wieder etwas gehört?

Der Ausnahmegrüne Michel Reimon schrieb in diesem Kontext auf Twitter zu mir „@leyrer we do not forgive, we do not forget, hm?” – vergessen sicher nicht, vergeben nur, wenn entsprechende Aktionen gesetzt und nicht nur leere Worte abgesondert werden. Und das ist IMHO bis jetzt nicht passiert.
