Was heutzutage alles „tragbar” ist ...

IBM redefined „Global”

From the „IBM still has geography problems” comes todays story. Via my feedreader, I stumbled across „The global XML Challenge” by IBM:

The global XML Challenge

I don’t know, why, but IBM wants to know (and probably didn’t shell out for an IP<->GeoInfo service like adultfriendfinder does) where you are from. Take a look at the location selector:

IBM country selection without Austria

Yes, right! There is no „Austria” (not to speak of „Österreich”), just „Germany”. So after spelling Wien (Vienna) as „Wein” (wine) and adding it to Germany, IBM again made Austria a part of Germany.

Thanks IBM. Very „global”.

Hehehe.

A tip for attendees of a Kid Rock concert

A small hint for concert goers (especially from the suburbs):
If you attend the Kid Rock concert because „All Summmer Long” ist „such a nice song” – PLEASE listen to some other stuff by Mr. Rock before you buy the ticket. Otherwise, it could happen, that you are scared out of your pants by songs like

How Dan Kaminsky broke and fixed DNS

Wired (as always) has a great story in Dan Kaminsky’s work on discovering and then helping to fix a net-crashing DNS bug earlier this year.

The next morning, Kaminsky strode to the front of the conference room at Microsoft headquarters before Vixie could introduce him or even welcome the assembled heavy hitters. The 16 people in the room represented Cisco Systems, Microsoft, and the most important designers of modern DNS software.

Vixie was prepared to say a few words, but Kaminsky assumed that everyone was there to hear what he had to say. After all, he’d earned the spotlight. He hadn’t sold the discovery to the Russian mob. He hadn’t used it to take over banks. He hadn’t destroyed the Internet. He was actually losing money on the whole thing: As a freelance computer consultant, he had taken time off work to save the world.

Joy to the Wall

Joy to the Wall (Perl)
(to Joy to the World)

Joy to the Wall, the Perl is come!
Let awk receive her King;
Let every grep prepare him room,
And bash and sed shall sing,
And bash and sed shall sing,
And bash, and bash, and sed shall sing.

Joy to the keyboard, we’ll use it all!
Let men, shift keys, employ;
Implicit variables, and globals never fall.
Repeat the line noise now,
Repeat the line noise now,
Repeat, repeat, the line noise now.

Perl rules the world with truth and ASCII,
And makes the doctors prove
The glories of carpal tunnel hands,
And we do it more than one way,
And we do it more than one way,
And we do it, and we do it, more than one way.

Via The Changelog.
