Many ideas on what to do/blog, many things learned, that I will try out and a lot seen in the last week. Unfortunately, I am unbelievable tired right now, so all that will have to wait another day or so.

William Gibson let’s his protagonist Cayce Pollard think this truth on jetlag in the book Pattern Recognition (excellent book by the way):

She knows, now, absolutely, hearing the white noise that is London, that Damien’s theory of jet lag is correct: that her mortal soul is leagues behind her, being reeled in on some ghostly umbilical down the vanished wake of the plane that brought her here, hundreds of thousands of feet above the Atlantic. Souls can’t move that quickly, and are left behind, and must be awaited, upon arrival, like lost luggage.

Was mich derzeit aufregt:

Neben neuen Förderaktionen der Österreichischen Hotel- und Tourismusbank (ÖHT) wird 2009 auch die Tourismuswerbung angekurbelt. Dazu werden für das Jahr 2009 von BMWA und der WKÖ 4 Millionen Euro für zusätzliche Aktionen in der Tourismuswerbung bereitgestellt.

Und das BM für Wirtschaft und Arbeit meint: Die ÖHT [Österreichische Tourismusbank, Anm.] hat 2008 im Auftrag des Wirtschaftsministeriums knapp 1.000 Tourismusprojekte mit einem Investitionsvolumen von rund 750 Millionen Euro gefördert.

Hans Schenner, Obmann der WKÖ-Sparte Tourismus und Freizeitwirtschaft meinte in diesem Zusammenhang in einer Presseaussendung über die Bedeutung des Tourismus als Jobmotor mit Standortgarantie. „Mit über 170.000 Beschäftigten im Hotel- und Gastgewerbe sind unsere Betriebe [60.000, Anm.] ein wichtiger Arbeitgeber.”

Es bekommen also einige der 60.000 Tourismusunternehmen in Österreich in diesem Jahr 754 MILLIONEN Euro dafür, den Leuten einzureden, ihr immer knapper werdendes Geld nicht zu sparen, sondern für Urlaube auszugeben.

 
Nur um das in Relation zu setzten: Laut Statistik Austria waren 2006 15.200 Unternehmen mit 111.766 Beschäftigten in der IKT-Branche (Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie-Branche) tätig. Vor zwei Jahren hatte die IKT-Branche mit deutlich weniger Betrieben fast genausoviel Mitarbeiter wie die Tourismusbranche. Und im Gegensatz zur Tourismusbranche handelt es sich dabei um Ganzjahresarbeitsplätze!

Es geht aber noch weiter. Laut Statistik Austria, WKÖ und BMWA (PDF) beliefen sich sich die direkten und indirekten Wertschöpfungseffekte des Tourismus 2006 auf 15,23 Mrd. Euro.

Im Gegensatz dazu: Laut den Zahlen der RTR vom Juni 2007 (PDF) belief sich der Umsatz des österreichischen IKT-Marktes im Jahr 2006 auf € 14,91 Mrd. – Tendenz weiter wachsend.

Wenn man sich diese Zahlen ansieht, stellen sich mir folgende Fragen:

1. Wäre die IKT-Branche damit nicht auch ein mindestens ebensowichtiger Arbeitgeber wie der Tourismus?
2. Warum bekommt die IKT-Branche von der Wirtschaftskammer Österreich (WKÖ) nicht auch zusätzliches Geld für Werbung, …?
3. Warum sind die IKT-Agenden in Österreich noch immer über zig Ministerien vertreut?
4. Warum wird der IKT-Masterplan der RTR nicht zügig umgesetzt?
5. Warum wird die IKT in den Medien nicht dem Tourismus mindestens gleichwertig berücksichtigt?

Ich denke, ich werde das mal ein paar Fragen an die Parteien und die WKÖ schicken. :)

P.S.: Im „Beherbergungs- und Gaststättenwesen” wurden 2007 503,5 Mio. Euro (5,3 Prozent der Umsätze) bereits über e-Commerce lukriert.

While the download of the 25C3 videos is no problem at all, due to the fact, that they are also offered as torrents, downloading the new IBM Notes 8.5 client is – as expected – the usual hassle.

First off, IBM seems to have a few expired SSL certificates still in use:

Secondly, they were – again – not able to distribute the files to all download servers before offering the files. The server located in Ireland does not – until now – hold the new Notes 8.5 files. You have to download them from the US. And it’s not that Notes 8.5 is sooo new, that they didn’t have the time to upload the code to the server in Irland. According to Ed Brill, NOtes 8.5 is finished at least since December 18, 2008.

They never learn. :(

Dear lazyweb. I am looking for a free/open source solution to „backup” or „synchronise” files from my Laptop to several locations. One target would be a USB hard disk, another a Linux server, connected via sftp/scp.

I tried Unison, which looked promising, and worked in my first tests, until I hit this, still unresolved, bug:

> The problem is simple - if you specify a path of format:

> Then folders a and b must exist on both source and target prior to unison running - if this isn’t true, then unison fails with the error:

> „path a/b is not valid because a/b is not a directory in one of the replicas”

So, dear lazyweb. Do you have any suggestions regarding a file „backup” solution, which basically allows me to keep several copies of my local home directory on several, distributed drives. If I can get away without a database to manage this and without installing GTK and Cygwin, it would be nice.
Oh, and I do not wnat to use Mozy, Amazon S3, … right now. I just want to sync with my Linux box.

Als vor knapp vier Jahrhunderten der italienische Astronom Galileo Galilei erstmals ein Teleskop für astronomische Beobachtungen verwendete, machte er eine Reihe bedeutender Entdeckungen. Fernrohre eröffneten den Forschern und Sternfreunden in den letzten 400 Jahren neue Horizonte und führten zu einem neuen Bild des Weltalls. Johannes Kepler veröffentlichte im selben Jahr 1609 seine „Astronomia nova”, eines der bahnbrechendsten Bücher über unser Sonnensystem. Erstmals gelang ihm eine Art physikalischer Begründung himmelsmechanischer Gesetze.
In Erinnerung an diese großen Fortschritte und an die Bedeutung der Astronomie für die Kultur der gesamten Menschheit hat die UNO das Jahr 2009 zum Jahr der Astronomie erklärt.

Es ist der erste Jänner 2009 und mittlerweile sollten auch alle Microsoft Zune MP3 Player wieder funktionieren.
Wie CNN berichtet, hat ein Programmierfehler in der internen Uhr, der zu jedem Schaltjahr ausgelöst wird, dazu geführt, dass sich die Zune 30 Player nicht mehr aktualisieren ließen. Lässt man den Akku leerlaufen und schaltet den Zune nach heute Mittag (US Ostküstenzeit) wieder ein, sollte es keine Probleme mehr geben (bis zum nächsten Schaltjahr 2012).

Doug Schmidt hat die Detals zu dem Bug veröffentlicht. So wie das aussieht, sollte eigentlich sogar ein FH-„Student” in der Lage sein, den Code korrekt zu programmieren.

Und das ist das Unternehmen, das unsere Firmen-, Gesundheits-, Finanz- und persönlichen Daten auf den PCs bereits verwaltet und in der Wolke verwalten will?

Da hat Microsoft heuer einiges zu tun, seine Glaubwürdigkeit wiederherzustellen.
