Hohe Wand Wiese

Da kann ich nur Calvin aus Bill Waterson’s ComicCalvin & Hobbeszitieren, der meinte: „Getting an inch of snow is like winning 10 cents in the lottery.”.

Video-Downloads: Sony's Next Waterloo?

The financial times reports „Sony to enter video download market” and every major news agency carries the news. Whereas the FT article is quite good, the derived „news offspring” is actually really bad and IMHO missing a few points. So I take a stab at the story.

Sony is in dire need of an online-success story, after it’s Connect Music Store debacle. Sony launched it’s online music store in May 2004 in the USA, almost a year after Apples initial launch of the iTunes Store and half a year after Apple’s launch of the iTunes Windows-Client. In my home country Austria, the Sony Connect Music Store became available on June 26th 2005!! Yes, 2005!

Stan Glasgow, the president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics Inc., sums up Sony Connect’s „success” quite nicely:

„it has not been successful”

So I am quite sceptical, that Sony can successfully set up and run a worldwide online video store that can successfully compete with Apples iTunes.

On the other side of an online store, there has to be a device to play the bought content. Sony’s UMD flopped completely – and not to my surprise. The UMD was as expensive as a regular DVD, would not play in a DVD-Player and no re-writeable media was/is available. So Sony had to settle – for now – with a 4 GB Memory Stick as the re-writable mass-storage for it’ PSP. The 4 Gb Memory Stick can, according to Sony, store up to 9 hours of MPEG-4 movies. And there are also rumors of a upcoming PSP with a built in harddisk circulating.

For now, you will have to by one or more of Sony’s proprietary Memory Sticks if you want to view movies on the PSP’s excellent 4.3-inch, 16:9 LCD TFT screen with a 480x272 pixel resolution. And you have to use either Sony’s or somebodyelse’s Software to convert the videos and copy them to the Memory Stick. Oh, and don’t forget, that a 4 GB Memory Stick can only store up to 9 hours of video.

If you get one of the 80 GB iPods from Apple, they can pack up to 100 hours of video. On the downside, you only get a 2,5-inch LCD with a resolution of 320x240 pixel. But the iTunes Software handles all the conversion/copying stuff.

For now, both offers/ideas underwhelm me. Why should I BUY videos in poor resolution in an online store, if I already bought the content on DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD for viewing in my home cinema? This didn’t make sense with the UMD and will probably won’t work for the online-stores either.

Dear Sony et al.: Get rid of the stupid and ineffective pseudo-DRM on DVDs and it’s successors and offer me an easy solution to rip my DVDs to iPod or PSP for viewing. Offer a software solution I can plug into my Windows Media Center – or similar – to record content from TV and let me put that on your gadgets seamlessly, quick and without hassle. If you offer that, I will consider buying one of your gadgets.

Oh, and by the way: If your gadget supports WiFi/WLAN, please do support WPA2.

There Is No „Console War”

There is no console war”! Believe me. Look at the definition of „console wars” over at Wikipedia:

„Console wars” is a term used to refer to periods of intense competition for market share between video game console manufacturers, with particular emphasis on television advertising. The winners of these „wars” may be debated based on different standards: market penetration and financial success, or the fierce loyalty and numbers of the fans of the system’s games.

A console war would require all three seventh generation consoles available on the market. This is not the fact here in Austria. We are one of what I would call „console third world countries”. We are the latest to get any of the new stuff. Remember Sony saying on March 15th 2006: „The PS3 will launch in early November 2006 in Japan, North America and Europe simultaneously.” LOL. ROTFL. I didn’t belive it then and I was right.

And, a console selling out is no indication of success:

My take on that: If you keep the supply artificially low, you will sell out.

Unlike citizen428, I am not going to get any of the available seventh generation consoles. It is definitely not worth it.

But I am happy for IBM, as they supply the CPU for all three consoles.

What I would like to see, is a console war like this:

Potentielles Feiertagsprojekt: Bücher nach Farben sortieren

Chris Cobb rearranged 20.000 books for his installation „There Is Nothing Wrong In This Whole Wide World”.

Books sorted by color

A friend of mine owns a bookstore and after a year of negotiating back and forth he finally allowed me to take over his store for a week, and to allow me to bring in my whole team of like 15 people, which is what I estimate it’ll take, maybe 20, and in one night—I’ve planned it out—if we stick to the guidelines, we can completely change the store.

I think there’s seven shelves in every unit. So you can estimate the number of books pretty accurately. It’s around 20,000 books. Because of how they’re positioned, I can map them out and give coordinates for every book. It’ll be, like, shelf 3, row 1. Each book will be given its own designation, so that after they’re all taken out and rearranged by color, when it comes time to put them back I can just go back to shelf 3, row 1, or whatever, and I’ll know exactly where they go.

Hmm.

I have been developing Pegasus Mail and Mercury full-time since 1992, providing them as free products and relying on voluntary financial support from those that used them. Unfortunately, in the last couple of years, a combination of spiralling costs and dwindling financial support from my users has led me to the point where I can now simply no longer afford to sustain this business model.

IBM Lotus Workplace is dead, long live IBM Lotus Ventura

As VoWe pointed out today, IBM Workplace Messaging is no more. It has ceased to be! ‘E’s expired and gone to meet ‘is maker! ‘E’s a stiff! Bereft of life, ‘e rests in peace! ‘Is metabolic processes are now ‘istory! ‘E’s off the twig! ‘E’s kicked the bucket, ‘e’s shuffled off ‘is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin’ choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-SOFTWARE-PRODUCT!!

But as soon as I read the announcement, something made click in my head. This actually makes sense! Remember the „Domino 8 - WhatÂ’s new” posting over at „Domino Blog”? They stated:

Nor does it require that you deploy any of our collaboration products such as Lotus Sametime, Lotus Quickplace, or Activities.

So there was a hint, that there will be a „Lotus Activities” product by IBM. Then there was Ed Brill’s comment „I’m not sure the product announcement has been made” in the comments to Volkers above mentioned „tidbid” (Ceci n’est pas un blog). So I cranked up Google and Technorati and found some „interesting” postings.

‘Cote’, a software Industry Analyst with RedMonk and well known for his „Drunk And Retired” podcast, wrote:

Ventura is the productized suite of several „Web 2.0” technologies, like:
  • IBM’s BluePages - an end-user oriented directory for storing and looking through people profiles
  • Dogear - IBM’s social bookmarking app.
  • Activities - a to do list with, of course, much more that just bullet points with things to do.
  • Communities - the „groups” part of the application.
  • Roller - for blogging. One question is how much IBM’s extended roller vs. used it out of the box. As ever, Sun should be asking themselves why IBM’s the one who’s figuring out selling roller „first.”
  • Lots of glue - things like search (which I need to get more details on), integration with SameTime and otherwise making all the components feel more like a suite rather than just separate things. And, of course, enterprisey things like directory integration and security. And, of course, feeds on everything.

Unfortunately, Cote’ pulled that posting off his „business” blog, but it is still available via Google Cache (you have to love Google for that feature). I think it has something to do with IBM being his client. ;)

According to the information I found so far, Ventura is IBM’s approach to Web/Enterprise 2.0, is all J2EE/Websphere and is using Apache Roller as the blogging platform. At least, that is the information I found in the postings by Dave Johnson, Luis Suarez, Elias Torres and Andy Piper.

Workplace is no more but with Ventura we will get, IMHO, another add-on product to Notes, along the lines of Sametime and Quickplace. But this time, it is not based on Notes/Domino but on Websphere. I do not like that too much, but we will see. I am also anxious to see how Roller (that is also used by Sun to power their corporate blogs) will play up against the Lotus Notes blog template. Interesting times ahead, I am sure.

So we will probably not hear a Workplace marketing pitch at Lotusphere ‘07, as Ed Maloney said in the comments to Volkers posting, but I expect to hear a lot on Ventura and how it will make our lives better. And I expect a lot of slides similar to Mike Roche’s „Bringing People and Processes Together”.

Mary Beth Will Change the View Icons - Check your Views!

Mary Beth Raven announced, that they will redraw all the view icons for Lotus Notes 8. While most icons will only get a facelift, a few icons will „change metaphors”, as Mary Beth put it:

10 – changes from the „finger with a string” to an alarm clock
Old icon Reminder -> New icon Reminder

160 – changes to a clock type thing from a person with a hand raised
Old icon Attention -> New Icon Attention

81 – changes from the X to a different kind of „do not” type international symbol
Old icon Do Not -> New icon Do Not

166 – (mood stamp for „joke”) changes from eyeglasses to a „drama mask”
Old icon Joke -> New Icon Joke

169 – indicator for „private” changes from the red hand to an envelope with a special seal on it
Old icon Private -> New Icon Private

As a few colleagues already commented in Mary Beth’s blog, the designers also changed the colours of a few icons (check icons # 98 to 100 and 114-120). Look out for that, if you are using these icons to represent status-information, etc.

If you are a Notes developer and don’t know what I am talking about, read up the chapter „Displaying an icon in a column” in the Domino Designer help.

According to Mary Beth, the new icons will look like this:
Table of column icons

Which, IMHO, is a great improvement over the ageing old version:
Table of column icons - OLD

So check your views now in case you are using one of the changed icons!

„Arbeits”platz

While the syntax for the rest of the URL may vary depending on the particular scheme selected, URL schemes that involve the direct use of an IP-based protocol to a specified host on the Internet use a common syntax for the scheme-specific data:

//<user>:<password>@<host>:<port>/<url-path>

Some or all of the parts „<user>:<password>@”, „:<password>”, „:<port>”, and „/<url-path>” may be excluded. The scheme specific data start with a double slash „//” to indicate that it complies with the common Internet scheme syntax. […]

The user name (and password), if present, are followed by a commercial at-sign „@”. Within the user and password field, any „:”, „@”, or „/” must be encoded.

$upid = $_POST["upID"];
$select_inhalt = "SELECT Inhalt, Autor, Datum, Titel FROM news WHERE id = ".$upid;
$result = mysql_query($select_inhalt) OR die (mysql_error());

Um Rasmus Lerdorf, den Erfinder von PHP zu zitieren: „Nothing that comes across the wire is to be trusted.”.

Activities in Notes/Domino8 -- again, IBM does not get it

There is a nice article about the upcoming IBM Lotus Domino 8 Server and it’s new features over at „Domino Blog”, the blog of the developers and product managers of the Lotus Domino team. Although a worthy and interesting read, there were a few points that somehow disturbed me. Especially the part regarding „Domino 8 is 100% Domino and has no hidden prerequisites”:

Domino 8 has no hidden prerequisites or new requirements for you to install (IBM WebSphere Application Server, IBM WebSphere Portal Server, and IBM DB2 are all optional extras you can chose to deploy). Nor does it require that you deploy any of our collaboration products such as Lotus Sametime, Lotus Quickplace, or Activities.

A few days later, Chris Reckling of IBM tried to clarify a few things, „so there is no mistake or FUD about requirements for running the server”, on the InsideLotus weblog. And he addressed exactly the points that bothered me:

Activities does require WAS to run, but that IS optional. Besides, Activities is basically a pure Web 2.0 app that can be used in lots of different contexts, both with Notes and standalone.

OK, if I want presence awareness and/or text-chat, I need a Sametime-Server. No problems with that, it was always a separate product. But a whole f***ing WebSphere Application Server with it’s system requirements just to get „Activities”, one of the themes of the Hannover/Note 8 release? Get real, IBM!

What I also did not know was, that „Activities” is a stand-alone product. The last time I checked, it still was part of the Lotus Workplace product line. Hmmmmm.

And there is also Ed Brill, Business Unit Executive, Worldwide Lotus Messaging Sales, IBM Software Group whom I would like to quote from one of his blog entries from April 20th, 2006 on activity-centric computing:

The more involved I get in the Notes „Hannover” project, the more convinced I am that Activities will be one of the primary drivers for upgrades to the new release …

Ed, if the infrastructure for activity-centric computing is not included in the base install of the Domino 8 server, my prediction would be that not many people will use it. Setting up (an) additional server(s) just to get something you still have to explain to everybody, will not result in additional WAS licences being sold.

Do not get me wrong. activity-centric computing (ACC) is a great concept but once again, IBM made the – IMHO – wrong decision in trying to push additional WAS sales instead of making activiy-centric computing a part of Domino 8. But they can still prove me wrong in including a WAS-ACC license with Domino 8. That could make (a small) difference.

The blog entry „Domino 8 - WhatÂ’s new” sounded IMHO too much like a Microsoft product announcement. Chris Recklings blog entry rectified that a little bit, but it is a very thin line between a blog that is trying to inform to a pure marketing platform.

I a looking forward to see how IBM is handling the marketing of Domino 8, especially the activity-centric computing part at it’s prerequisites in it’s official communication.

Dear Hollywood, code does not ...

1. move
In films and television code is always sailing across the screen at incredible speeds […] I understand that to the non-savvy person the abilities of a programmer might seem amazingly complex, but do they honestly think we can read shit that isn’t sitting still?

8. Code isn’t just 0100110 010101 10100 011
Hey Hollywood directors: programmers use this neat thing called the ALPHABET. It’s got letters that you put together to form words. We even put spaces between those words.

And so on. For the complete list, see „What code DOESN’T do in real life (that it does in the movies)

I do not agree on „People who write code use mice”. Most programmers I know prefer the keyboard to write code. That is IMHO one of the reasons, why VI and Emacs are still around.

RFID Firewall

Thou shalt never badmouth a competitor

„Management guru” Tom Peters on badmouthing one’s competitor:

I think that when one badmouths one’s competitors or tries to limit their activities, the „word gets around.” And one develops a reputation as prickly and egocentric—and, well, as a selfish jerk.

Now, I completely agree with Mr. Peters, but what he keeps out of his little blog is the question „how do you deal with being badmouthed by a competitor? THAT is the really interesting question – IMHO.

The Court Jester - Der Hofnarr

One of my all time favorites: „The Court Jester” with Danny Kaye.
Einer meiner absoluten Lieblingsfilme: „Der Hofnarr” mit Danny Kaye.

My dear Susanne found this wonderful snipped from the film on YouTube. It is the hilarious „The Pellet With The Poison” aka. „Der Becher mit dem Fächer” scene. Check it out:

„The pellet with the poison’s in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true.“ ROTFL !!!

Themenverfehlung

Keine RSS-Feeds, kein User-Generated Content, kein AJAX.

Chutzpah

Ben Langhinrichs is a great guy. For the seventh year he provides the Notes Community with something that Lotus/IBM doesn’t provide: a Lotusphere Agenda Database for PDA Synching and Session Planning. And he does that for free, no strings attached.

And then there is this „technology consultant” Robert H. Baehr, the self proclaimed „Unofficial Poster Child For Lotus Notes and Domino”, posting in his blog: „The Genii Lotusphere Session Database for Lotusphere 2007 has been posted in the downloads section of BOBBAEHR.COM.” And I went „wait a moment”. I can’t imagine that Ben posted his database not to his own server.

And it gets „better”. To download the Database from his server, Mr. Baehr requires a name and and valid email address so that he can eiter send you the database or a link to it. Can you spell „adress harvesting”? WTF?

I can’t imagine the chutzpah this man must have, using a freely available database to harvest contacts.

As Ben said in a comment to Mr. Baehrs blog: „As the copyright holder, I don’t much mind people handing the database around, but I do object to its use as a way of harvesting contact information. People who want the database can get it for free and without providing any information on our website …”

You can get Genii Software’s 7th Annual Lotusphere Agenda Database for PDA Synching and Session Planning at Genii Softwares site.

Also, say no to abgedrehten Personalauswahlverfahrens-Theoretikern, say no to Firmen, die an diesem bescheuerten Spiel teilnehmen, say no to Stromlinien-Verhalten.

Es gibt keinen perfekten Bewerber. Jeder, ausnahmslos, wächst an seiner Aufgabe.

There Is No Place Like 127.0.0.1

Robert Basic verlinkt auf PapaScott:

So when Nicole says noone will read you if you blog in German, sheÂ’s right. Try Chinese or Korean.

Das führte mich zu Nicoles Einträgen „Nicht in Deutsch, in Englisch müßt Ihr schreiben.” und „Does it bother or concern you that English appears to be the native tongue for the Internet.”, was wiederum zu „English or Estonian observations” von Rick Segal und „No Matter Where You Are In The World, ThereÂ’s No Place Like 127.0.0.1” führte.

Was tun? Deutsch oder Englisch schreiben. Beides?

Also was tun?

Too bad porn is basically just images and nonsense sound which does not need no translation, otherwise we would have had a working babelfish 5 years ago …

… much of the evidence for the confiscations remains anecdotal …

Mal schauen, was dabei raus kommt.

Travel and Tourism Advisory Board (TTAB) mit dem Titel „Restoring AmericaÂ’s Travel Brand: A National Strategy to Compete for International Visitors” zitiert. In dem ACTE-Whitepaper heißt es:

There is also evidence that visitors are voting with their feet. AmericaÂ’s share of the global travel market has fallen 35 per cent over the past 16 years. These figures pertain principally to leisure travel but the ACTE survey suggests there is a problem in business travel too. Forty-three per cent of the travel buyer respondents said heightened security and immigration controls have deterred their travellers from visiting the US.

Was hast Du aus unserem schönen „Last Christmas” gemacht?

VIM 7 -- Opening Multiple Files In Tabs

In March, I complained about a missing feature in Vim 7. Using the default gvimext.dll, there is an option in the Windows Explorer to „Open in new Vim” or „Open in existing Vim”, but no to say „Open as new Tab in existing Vim”. I found a replacement on the web but that site went away not long after I found it.

Now, Tianmiao Hu uploaded an alternative version of gvimext.dll to vim.org witch supports loading files into a VIM tab. From his „readme”:

This update to gvimext.dll supports the loading of files under a new tab in VIM 7. Both the gvimext.dll and its updated source codes are provided in the attached zip file.

I believe this code change will be included in the upcoming VIM release. So this upload is for the brave and the impatient.

Below is the usage:
0. The new dll will display „Edit with … using tabs” options upon right-click on files in Windows Explorer based on a registry key and the Shift key combination.
1. If you don’t import UseTab.reg file into registry, gvimext.dll will behave just like before the change. You can still get the „using tabs” options by holding down the Shift key before right-clicking the files.
2. Shift key effect
Shift key serves as a toggle key for the „Edit with … using tabs” context menu. If you hold down the Shift key and then right-click the selected files in Windows Explorer, the opposite of the default Vim context menu will display.

Vorsicht, schert aus!

Lenovo Thinkpad Widescreen Choice

15.4” WSXGA+ (1680x1050) TFT.

David Hill meint dazu in Lenovos „Design Matters” blog:

This is the first true classic design ThinkPad to feature a wide screen view. Previous ventures in this space used the experimental Z series design. […] Aside from the screen, it’s design is pretty much the same as the current T60.

Widescreen vs. Regular

Ballmer == Uncle Fester?

Gizmondo has a story on Steve Ballmer looking like Uncle Fester from the TV series „The Addams Family”. If you do a Google-Imagesearch on „Uncle Fester”, you will find Steve on Page two. According to one of the Gizomondo readers, someone at MS entered ‘uncle fester’ as a keyword on the corresponding Microsoft webpage for google to find.

Not that this is new information. I had a similar posting up in March 2004.

Books That Every Programmer Should Read

Via digg, I came across „The 5 Books that Every Programmer Should Read” by Shane Sherman. I don’t agree with his selection on all points. IMHO, Joel Spolsky’s list would fit my preferences better. I especially like this comment:

I think that this book, universally known as K&R, is THE book anyone who wants to be a programmer must learn first. Pick it up and work through it in detail. If you love every minute of it, you can be a programmer. If you find this old-school text programming stuff boring, or the pointer stuff drives you crazy, trust me, you’re not going to like programming very much.
