Wer schon mal in den USA war, der kennt es – das US-VISIT Programm. Laut der US-Regierung dient es den folgenden Zwecken:

Das US-Visit Programm ist ein Einreise-Ausreise System zur Überwachung der US Grenzen und um das US Einwanderungsgesetz besser kontrollieren zu können. Dieses System wurde zum Schutz der Vereinigten Staaten, dessen Bürger und internationalen Besuchern entwickelt.
 
Am ersten Einreiseort in den USA, wird ein Mitarbeiter der Einwanderungsbehörde Ihren Reisepass scannen, ein Foto von Ihnen machen und einen Fingerabdruck nehmen und einscannen.

Tatsache ist, dass US-VISIT die Einreise verzögert, zahlreiche Pannen hatte, nicht funktioniert und erst ein „Verdächtiger” erwischt wurde.

In einem aktuellen Bericht auf heise.de wurde nun aber die Erklärung publiziert, warum US-Visit schlimmer suckt als ein 9000-Watt-Staubsauger:

Zwischen den Diskussionen der Fachleute gab es auf dem Polizeikongress Firmenpräsentationen. Der Videospezialist Mobotix hielt ein Plädoyer für hochauflösende Überwachungskameras, SAP warb mit dem Programm US-VISIT, das die Walldorfer für das US-amerikanische Department of Homeland Security entwickelt haben.

Mein Kommentar dazu:
Der Reiseführer für Anhalter definiert die die Entwickler bei SAP als „ein Rudel hirnloser Irrer, die als erste an die Wand gestellt werden, wenn die Revolution kommt”, nebst einer Fußnote, in der die Redaktion jede Bewerbung um den Posten eines SAP-Korrespondenten ausserordentlich willkommen heisst.
Komischerweise definierte ein Exemplar der Encyclopedia Galactica, das das große Glück hatte, durch einen Zeitsprung aus der 1000 Jahre entfernten Zukunft herauszufallen, die Entwickler bei SAP als „ein Rudel hirnloser Irrer, die als erste an die Wand gestellt wurden, als die Revolution kam”.

Newsfeeds (RSS, Atom, …) führen ja IMHO bislang leider ein unberechtigtes Schattendasein. OK, Wenn man Sy9 oder Wordpress installiert ist es dabei, aber die möglichen Verwendungszwecke werden doch kaum ausgenutzt – vor allem, wenn man an das Atom-Format denkt.

Barack Obama und seine Regierung könnten das nun aber nachhaltig ändern und auch in der etablierten IT-Szene für eine schnellere Adoption von Newsfeeds in so langweiligen Applikationen wie SAP und anderen ERP-Programmen, CRM Lösungen SQL-Datenbanken oder sogar Excel sorgen.

Mit dem Memorandum (PDF) M-09-10 „Initial Implementing Guidance for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009” werden die Bezieher des „Stimulus Bill” von Obama dazu gezwungen, via RSS oder Atom Feed die Verwendung der zugewiesenen Summen auf wöchentlicher Basis zu dokumentieren!

Und nicht nur das. Es reicht dabei nicht, einfach einen Link zu einem Excel File oder einfach ein wenig Text zu publizieren. Nein. Es müssen sinnvolle Daten strukturiert veröffentlicht werden (daher auch die Präferenz zu Atom). Zum Beispiel:

Könntet Ihr Euch vorstellen, was man mit den Daten anstellen könnte, wenn alle Bezieher von öffentlichen Fördergeldern, EU-Förderungen, Bund- Landes- oder Gemeindezuschüssen die Verwendung so publizieren müssten? Auf einmal könnte/würde allen Bürgern klar werden, wo die Milliarden hinverschwinden. PLanetFoerderung.eu wäre dann sicherlich eine sehr gut besuchte Site. ;)

Aber während die USA die vorhandene Technologie einsetzen, um ihren Bürgern zumindest die Illusion von Kontrolle zu geben, belassen es die Politiker der EU und Österreichs dabei, Reden zu schwingen.

As I am still trying to catch up with my Feedreader, I stumbled across „Offline Gmail” by Google Labs from January 27, 2009:

Today we’re starting to roll out an experimental feature in Gmail Labs that should help fill in those gaps: offline Gmail. So even if you’re offline, you can open your web browser, go to gmail.com, and get to your mail just like you’re used to.

you can choose to use „flaky connection mode,” which is somewhere in between: it uses the local cache as if you were disconnected, but still synchronizes your mail with the server in the background.

I was as flabbergasted by this „announcment” (Offline Gmail is still marked „experimental), as I just don’t grok it. Mobile Internet and WLAN are inventions that are not that old. There was a life before the whole „always on” hype. Large areas are still without proper wireless (or wirebound) broadband connections but companies like Google and the A-Bloggers/Twitters/Writers behave like there is WiFi everywhere – which just isn’t the case.

Now they are catching up by reinventing Sync for the Xth time, retrofitting systems and architectures for offline mode that were never ment to be taken offline. With the expected results.

That’s why I like Notes. Replication (sync) was built in there since the first release in 1989. So I can work online, connected to my server(s) – with real clustering, not that glorified cold standbys Microsoft offers – but also offline, if I can’t get a connection on the airplain, in the train or in the Waldviertel. And all that eiter by switching a „location” or even running in that seamless „flaky connection mode” Google is so proud about.
And that worked with modem dial dial-up connections in the 90ties, with broadband internet connections after that, with the now hyped mobile internet offerings and will probably work with the next cool technology that comes after that.

And I have nice features like „only get me the mail, not the attachment”. Oh, and offline mode usually works with every Notes-based application too. Nice, eh?

At Lotusphere, I had the opportunity to hear David Allen speak twice – once during his session „IBM Lotus Notes and Me: Maximizing Personal Productivity with Lotus Notes” and also during the Birds of a Feather session „Getting Things Done with IBM Lotus Notes”. He is a very charismatic speaker who radiates – or better oozes, as „radiate” would take to much active energy – relaxation, confidence and humor.

In case you don’t know David, he is the author of „Getting Things Done. The Art of Stress-Free Productivity” or short „GTD”, a methodology or framework to get more done with less stress. This method got quite a big following, especially in the IT crowd. Google for „GTD” and you will know what I mean.

„Making It All Work: Winning at the Game of Work and Business of Life” is his third book on that topic and – in true fanboy tradition – I took the opportunity during Lotusphere to get a signed copy. :)

Content wise, „Making It All Work” does not offer much new content in comparison to „GTD” and the followup „Ready for Anything: 52 Productivity Principles for Work and Life”. David reiterates on the topics of GTD and how to apply them in practice, adding more examples and putting more focus on the „altitudes” – his metaphor as to where your focus is at any time.

For me, it was a nice motivator to get back on the GTD bandwaggon, but I wouldn’t recommend it as your first GTD book. I wouldn’t even go o far as to recommend it as your second GTD book.
If you can find them, I would recommend the „Getting Things Done Fast: The Ultimate Stress-free Productivity System” CD. They give a very thorough inside view into GTD and overlap with „Making It All Work” quite a lot.

But if you need a litte „nudge” to get your GTD implementation up and running again or want or need a little bit more information on the „altitude” modell of Allen, do buy the book.

Es gibt ein Computerprogramm, das so über allem erhaben scheint, wie der Kaiser in dem Märchen, dem die Kleider fehlen. Alle sagen respektvoll: toller Kaiser, tolle Software! Dabei ist der Kaiser nackt, und die Software auch.
 
Käme die Software von Microsoft, würde jeder drauf herumhacken. Aber sie stammt von dem David im Goliathkampf der Computersysteme, nämlich von Apple, und auf Apple hackt man nicht herum, erst recht nicht jetzt, wo der Chef so krank ist.

During the 1990s, J. Michael Straczynski hired filmmaker John Hudgens to compile eight videos which set Babylon 5 clips to music.

Until now, only fans who attended science fiction conventions where JMS or Hudgens screened the videos have seen them. In December 2008, JMS authorized Hudgens to post them on YouTube.

Sg. Damen und Herren, der „Valentinstag” ist NICHT der „Tag der Liebenden”, wie u.a. auch die Wikipedia belegt:

1950 veranstaltete man in Nürnberg den ersten „Valentinsball“; der Valentinstag wurde offiziell eingeführt. Allgemein bekannt wurde er durch die dann verstärkt einsetzende Werbung der Floristen und der Süßwarenindustrie.

Die Urprünge möge ja nett/romantisch gewesen sein, aber mittlerweile ist das nur mehr Kommerz.

Anstatt die Liebe auf diesen einen Tag zu konzentrieren, wäre es doch gescheiter, die „Liebe” an allen Tagen zu leben.

Seit Oktober 2001 ist Windows XP (Versionsnummer „NT 5.1.2600”) am Markt. Und es funktioniert eigentlich recht gut („All software sucks (but some suck more than others.)” gilt natürlich, aber relativ gesehen sind die gröbsten Probleme mit XP ausgestanden).

Seitdem hat Microsoft verzweifelt an Vista gearbeitet. Seit der ersten offiziellen Vorstellung auf der PDC 2003 waren mehrere Entwicklungs-Neustarts sowie der „Abwurf” mehrere Features notwendig, damit im Jänner 2007 Windows Vista (Versionnummer „NT 6.0.6001”) auf den Markt kommen konnte (und nein, ich diskutiere nicht mehr darüber, ob nun der 8.11.2006 (RTM), der November 2006 (volume licensing) oder eben der Jänner 2007 (retail) als Launchdatum gesehen werden soll).

Und jetzt, nur zwei Jahre nach dem großen Launch der allumfassend, glücklichmachenden Windows Version, ist Vista mittlerweile kein Thema mehr. In den einschlägigen Blogs und Foren wird immer mehr über Windows 7 und immer weniger über Windows Vista geschrieben. Und zwar schon auf dem Level „wie kann ich von der Beta auf den RC und dann die finale Version upgraden” und nicht mehr auf dem „na ich bin gespannt, wie Windows 7 wird” oder „die Beta schaut nett aus” Level. Und wenn man so den Tweets folgt, muss es mittlerweile schon fast mehr Windows 7 als Vista Installationen geben.

Es wundert mich allerdings nicht, dass der Fokus von Microsoft, der MVPs und der nachgelagerten Hofberichterstattung sich hin zu Windows 7 verschiebt, deutet doch schon die Versionnummer von Windows 7 – NT 6.1.7000 – ganz klar darauf hin, dass es sich bei Vista nur um die längste Beta-Phase in der Entwicklung eines Betriebssystemsupdates (XP zu 7) und nicht wirklich um ein fertiges Produkt handelte – und dann muss man zugestehen, dass Vista für eine Beta-Version von Microsoft eigentlich sehr stabil war.

Was mich aber noch mehr beeindruckt ist die Tatsache, dass Microsoft mit diesem Releasezyklus sogar das Debian-Team schlägt.

Materna berichtet stolz:

Sony Music hat mit Materna Communications eine Vereinbarung getroffen, nach der beide Unternehmen ein neuartiges Angebot für den Verkauf von digitalen Downloads auf den Sony Music Artist Webseiten direkt an den Endkunden in Europa realisieren wollen. Der Dienst wird - in Kooperation mit dem Payment Service Provider GlobalCollect - eine große Anzahl von lokalen Zahlungsmethoden ermöglichen. Das genaue Datum des Starttermines und Informationen zu den angebotenen Diensten werden in den kommenden Wochen veröffentlicht.

Sony versucht sich also wieder mal in einem Online Store. Ob das von Materna wirklich so gescheit war, die Zusammenarbeit mit Sony so hinauszuposaunen? Schließlich ist Sony nicht gerade mit Erfolgen am Online-Markt gesegnet.

BTW: Eine Notiz an die Damen und Herren der Materna Presseabteilung: Wenn die Aussendung kürzer als die nachfolgende Firmenbeschreibung ist, sollte man sich überlegen, ob man diese überhaupt aussendet. Aus sowas lässt sich keine Geschichte machen.

Das Projekt strebt an, die Verbreitung von reichhaltigen Interneterlebnissen auf Fernsehbildschirmen, PCs und mobilen Geräten voranzutreiben und hierbei die Möglichkeiten der Adobe Flash Platform zu nutzen.

Liebe PR-Agenturen. Es ist ja nett, dass Ihr Euch bemüht, englischsprachige Presseassendungen vom Mobile World Congress zu übersetzen. Aber gebt Euch doch etwas mehr mühe und übersetzt nicht quasi wörtlich. Dann wird es nämlich etwas verständlicher & lesbarer.

Somit gibt es, was die Spieleperformance betrifft, mittlerweile keinen Grund mehr, auf Windows Vista zu verzichten. zitiert Georg auf vistablog.at im Februar 2008 die „Computer Base”. Auf mein Posting hin publiziert er dann im März 2008 die Geschichte „Vista kommt auch bei Spielern an”.

Also, lieber Georg. Innerhalb (fast) eines Jahres konnte Vista 32 bei den Valve-Spielern heiße 9,53 Prozent und Vista 64 coole 6,15 Prozent Marktanteil gewinnen. Wenn es in der Rate weitergeht, braucht Vista (egal ob 32 oder 64 Bit) ja „nur” noch 4,3 Jahre, um alle XP Installationen zu ersetzten. Und das nach bereits 2 Jahren am Markt. Ist das der „WOW-Effekt”? ;)

Da bin ich schon überrascht, dass Georg ohne rot zu werden Sätze wie So setzen Immer mehr Leute auf Vista, auch bei sehr kritischen Zielgruppen wie Spielern! postet. Auf mich wirkt das eher wie ein großes Fiasko.

Und wenn man sich so auf Twitter umhört, bekommt man den Eindruck, dass Vista/2 Windows 7 schon mehr Installationen als Vista hat. Überrascht mich nicht, schlechter kann es ja kaum noch werden. :)

During and after Lotusphere, IBM always offered PDFs of the presentations and (last year) also MP3s of the sessions for download via the Lotusphere Online conference site.
This year, they did it differently. This morning, I found this mail in my Inbox:

…On Friday, February 6, 2009 at 4:00 pm eastern time, Lotusphere Online 2009 will close. Registered conference attendees, including IBM participants, will still be able to meet, network, share and interact with other conference participants, as well as access presentation PDFs and soon, presentation MP3s, in LotusLive….

As I already had an LotusLive account, I loaded up the site and … nothing. No PDFs, no MP3s, no notice from IBM. Nada.

After looking around for another five minutes, I posted a question regarding this to Twitter and Facebook. Julian then pointed me to Alan’s blogposting, where Martha Hoyt (Product Manager for LotusLive) from LotusLive provided the crucial and in the e-mail and posting on ls09.info missing information:

The Lotusphere 2009 sessions will be posted when Lotusphere Online shuts down on Friday, February 6th, 2009 at 4pm. If you have joined LotusLive and you went to Lotusphere, you will be part of a Lotuphere2009 group. That group will have access to all the sessions right in your account. You will look in Files, see the left hand navigator and look or Collections, Collections Shared with me.

The Lotusphere group is a set of all the people who registered for Lotusphere 2009. So, whatever email address you used for that would be the one that would give you access.

Now if IBM would have added these two paragraphs to the e-mail and/or the posting on ls09.info, everything would have been clear and easy.
After registering another account using the e-mail address I used at Lotusphere, I saw the one file, that was already uploaded.

Dear IBM, please use a litte bit of common sense next time you send out such invites!

Do you have several network cards? Are you annoyed by all these Limited or no connectivity” or „A Network Cable Is Unplugged” popups? There is a simple and quick solution to disable these:

Just delete the Registry Key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7007ACCF-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E}
