Seit 2008 versuchte zuerst die brasilianische Polizei und anschließend auch das FBI, die mit Truecrypt verschlüsselte Festplatte eines brasilianischen Bankers zu entschlüsseln, der sich für diverse „Finanzverbrechen” vor Gericht verantworten muss.

Wäre der Banker in UK beheimatet, würde er schon dafür ins Gefängnis gehen, da dort bereits ein Gesetz existiert, dass man Paßwörter den Behörden auf Anfrage bekannt geben muss.

Und dann gibt es natürlich auch noch einen ganz anderen Zugang, an die Daten zu kommen, wenn man unbedingt möchte:

RDF is said to distort an audience’s sense of proportion or scale. Small advances are applauded as breakthroughs. Interesting developments become turning points, or huge leaps forward.

This Wikipedia definition of the „Reality distortion field” came to my mind every time an Iphone user today tweets, posts, … how cool it is that he/she/it can use his/her/its Iphone to listen to online-streams while tweeting (or doing similar things with the new „multitasking”¹ in the OS X Update for the Iphone). I’m able to do that on my Nokia E71 since I bought in in 2008.

Out of the box, Levelator doesn’t run on newer Ubuntu versions. The explanation for that in the forums is:

The last version we supported was Feisty Faun. The Levelator uses wxPython, and our developers tell us it’s a gnarly problem to support each version of Linux because of that. Just not enough Ubuntu users at this time to justify the effort. I know that’s harsh, but it’s the reality of what we’re up against.

In the same thread, a user posted a „fix”, so that it could run on newer Ubuntu Versions. Edit the „levelator file” (vi levelator) and change the line
python main.py
to
python2.5 main.py

This should help, if you have Python 2.5 installed. Unfortunately for Lucid Lynx users, this python version is no longer supported. So you have to install this version too, to get Levelator (in the rather old version 1.3) running.
To do that, you have to add another PPA to your system:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fkrull/deadsnakes
And then install Python 2.5:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install python2.5

After that, Levelator runs like a charm on Ubuntu 10.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx).

Erstmals öffnet die Electric Avenue im quartier21 fÃŒr einen „Digitalen Dienstag” am 08. Juni ab 17 Uhr ihre TÃŒren. Ein abwechslungsreiches Programm, das bei freiem Eintritt besucht werden kann, spiegelt das vielfÀltige Angebot des quartier21 im Bereich der Digitalen Kunst und Kultur wider. PrÀsentiert wird ein dichtes digitales Line Up bis 22 Uhr.

Digitalks lÀdt um 17.30 Uhr zu einem Workshop zum Thema „Sicherheit im Netz” in den Raum D / quartier21. Martin Leyrer erklÀrt das Einmaleins des sicheren Surfens im Netz.

Sowohl Internet wie auch das World Wide Web werden immer integriertere Bestandteile unseres Lebens. Jedoch sollte man im virtuellen Leben einige grundlegende Details beachten, um problemfrei die Vorteile der Online-Angebote nutzen zu können.

So wie z.B. das regelmÀßige Service des Autos oder das Versperren der HaustÃŒre zu den SelbstverstÀndlichkeiten des tÀglichen Lebens gehören, so sollte man auch seinen Rechner „versperren” und regelmÀßig einer ÜberprÃŒfung unterziehen.

Um „sicher” im Netz unterwegs zu sein, genÃŒgt es jedoch nicht nur, eine Software zu installieren. Ein prÃŒfender Blick auf die diversen Angebote und deren Nutzungsbedingungen gehören genauso dazu, wie ein kritischer Blick darauf, welche Daten von den verschiedenen Diensten ÃŒberhaupt gesammelt werden.

WÀhrend es in manchen Situationen wichtig ist, genau zu wissen, mit wem man online kommuniziert und wie man dessen IdentitÀt - etwa bei signierten E-Mails - ÌberprÌfen kann, so ist es - etwa im Rahmen einer Recherche - manchmal von Vorteil, wirklich anonym im Netz unterwegs zu sein.

Teil 1 - Sicher Online
Firewall, Virenscanner, Einstellungen - Was sollte ich beachten, wenn ich „sicher” surfen will. Welche Einstellungen sollte ich in meinem Browser Àndern, wie schÃŒtze ich mich vor Spyware und Drive-By Downloads. Sind Cookies nun gut oder böse, wie kann ich diese einfacher verwalten. Wie kann ich „sicher” Online-Banking und andere Online-Angebote nutzen.

Teil 2 - Vertrauen ist gut, …
Wie kann ich mich relativ gefahrlos in Sozialen Netzwerken bewegen. Was sollte ich im Umgang mit den diversen Anwendungen dieser Netzwerke beachten. Wann und wem darf ich meine Passwörter bekannt geben, wer verbirgt sich eigentlich hinter dieser Site, udgl.

Teil 3 - Black Helicopter Alert
Wirklich anonym ÃŒber das Internet zu kommunizieren, ist ein Anspruch, den nicht nur die AnhÀnger von Verschwörungstheorien fÃŒr sich in Anspruch nehmen können. Auch AnwÀlte, Unternehmen sowie Personen wie Du und ich wollen oder mÃŒssen immer wieder im Web surfen oder kommunizieren können, ohne Spuren zu hinterlassen. Aber auch das Löschen von Accounts in diversen Netzwerken oder Diensten ist nicht immer so einfach, wie man sich das vorstellt. Im letzten Teil des Workshops widmen wir uns den „schwarzen KÃŒnsten” des Internets wie etwa dem Tor Netzwerk oder jenen „offenen Proxies” um solche Inhalte sehen zu können, die vor uns verborgen werden.

I spent this years Towel Day in London, and of course I had my towel with me (to the surprise of a few Notes-Geeks ;).

Towel Day is celebrated every May 25 as a tribute by fans of the late author Douglas Adams. The commemoration was first held in 2001, two weeks after his death on May 11, and since then has been extended to an annual event. On this day, fans carry a towel with them throughout the day. The towel is a reference to Adams’s popular science fiction comedy series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Being in London for Towel Day meant for me visiting Douglas Noel Adams grave at Highgate Cemetery (East), where Douglas Adams rests in the vincinity of Patrick Caulfield, Michael Faraday, Anna Mahler, Karl Marx and Malcolm McLaren:

The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a very unevenly edited book and contains many passages that simply seemed to its editors like a good idea at the time.
 
One of these (the one Arthur now came across) supposedly relates the experiences of one Veet Voojagig, a quiet young student at the University of Maximegalon, who pursued a brilliant academic career studying ancient philology, transformational ethics and the wave harmonic theory of historical perception, and then, after a night of drinking Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters with Zaphod Beeblebrox, became increasingly obsessed with the problem of what had happened to all the biros he’d bought over the past few years.
 
There followed a long period of painstaking research during which he visited all the major centres of biro loss throughout the galaxy and eventually came up with a quaint little theory which quite caught the public imagination at the time. Somewhere in the cosmos, he said, along with all the planets inhabited by humanoids, reptiloids, fishoids, walking treeoids and superintelligent shades of the colour blue, there was also a planet entirely given over to biro life forms. And it was to this planet that unattended biros would make their way, slipping away quietly through wormholes in space to a world where they knew they could enjoy a uniquely biroid lifestyle, responding to highly biro-oriented stimuli, and generally leading the biro equivalent of the good life.
 
And as theories go this was all very fine and pleasant until Veet Voojagig suddenly claimed to have found this planet, and to have worked there for a while driving a limousine for a family of cheap green retractables, whereupon he was taken away, locked up, wrote a book, and was finally sent into tax exile, which is the usual fate reserved for those who are determined to make a fool of themselves in public.
 
When one day an expedition was sent to the spatial coordinates that Voojagig had claimed for this planet they discovered only a small asteroid inhabited by a solitary old man who claimed repeatedly that nothing was true, though he was later discovered to be lying.
 
There did, however, remain the question of both the mysterious 60,000 Altairan dollars paid yearly into his Brantisvogan bank account, and of course Zaphod Beeblebrox’s highly profitable second-hand biro business.

Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter Custom Stratocaster hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff beer.

Adams later revealed that the particular song to which he refers in the book – although never by name – is „Tunnel Of Love”, from the Making Movies album.

Oh, and I searched (and with the help of Susanne) also found Fenchurch station (also see „So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish”):

Fenchurch is a lovely girl, and she’s a bit fractured. She resides on the Earth, and Arthur Dent falls completely in love with her.
Her unusual name stems from having been conceived in the ticket queue at Fenchurch Street Station. Or so her parents claim. They refuse to elaborate further, saying only that you wouldn’t believe how bored it is possible to get in the ticket queue at Fenchurch Street Station. She plays the cello, has good taste in music and owns a pair of speakers that „would have impressed the guys who put up Stonehenge.”

Douglas Adams was taken away from us way too early. May he rest in peace, without pressure from deadlines, happily tinkering away on his Mac. :)

Am Dienstag hat ein Richter in den USA grünes Licht für eine Klage gegen Microosft gegeben. In der Anklage wird Microsoft beschuldigt, die Öffentlichkeit mit der Bezeichnung „Windows Vista Capable” vorsätzlich irre geführt zu haben.
Die Initiatoren der Klage behaupten, dass Microsoft absichtlich eine Lockvogeltaktik angewandt haben, indem das Unternehmen behauptet, dass Kunden mit „Vista Capable” Rechnern Geräte kaufen, die Vista laufen lassen können, obwohl dies nur für eine „kastrierte” Vista-Version (ohne der neuen Oberfläche, kein Media Center, …) gilt.

Schöööööööön, auch wenn es laut The Register leider kaum zur Verhandlung kommen wird.

Google hat mit den Nachrichtenagenturen Associated Press (AP), Agence France-Presse (AFP), Canadian Press (CP) und der britischen Press Association (PA) ein recht interessantes Abkommen geschlossen. Bislang fasste Google gleichlautende Meldungen verschiedener Medien in einen Block zusammen und linkte zu den einzelnen Medien. In Zukunft linkt Google auch direkt zu der Agenturmeldung, welche die verschiedenen Medien verwendet haben.

Diese Agenturmeldung wird von Google direkt gehostet und beinhaltet auch Werbung, dere Erlös den Agenturen zu gute kommt. „Unsere Nutzer werden künftig in der Lage sein, sich bei Google auch die Originalquelle in voller Länge anzuschauen”, so Josh Cohen, Business Product Manager für Google News.

Für den mündigen Nachrichtenkonsumenten wird es so noch einfacher, Meldungen die einfach von einer Agentur übernommen wurden, von originären, selbst recherchierten Geschichten zu trennen. Ob wir dann endlich wieder mehr interessante Meldungen zu sehen bekommen, anstelle des tristen Einheitsbreis? Man wird sehen.

Interessant wird auch, ob und wenn ja, wie sich der Agenturmarkt deswegen verändert wird. Der Zwischenhändler „lokales Medium” wird so von Google und den Agenturen übergangen und die Meldungen direkt zu den Konsumenten gebracht - ohne, dass diese für ein Agenturabo zahlen müssten. Ob das gut geht?

Die beiden österreichischen Platzhirschen im Agenturmarkt, APA und pte, halten sich diesbezüglich auf jeden Fall noch sehr bedeckt und haben beide zu dem Thema „Agenturen liefern Inhalte direkt an Google” noch keine Meldung ausgegeben. :)
