The good, the bad and HSDPA

From a pure coverage perspective WiMAX is twice as energy-cost-effective and metro Wi-Fi is 50 times more energy-cost-effective than WCDMA. When data traffic is factored into the equation, WiMAX can accommodate 11 times today’s average data consumption and still be more energy-cost-efficient compared to WCDMA or HSDPA.

A recent ABI Research study found that the total energy consumption arising from mobile broadband service delivery is forecast to grow from 42.8 billion kilowatt hours (KWh) in 2005 to 124.4 billion KWh in 2011.

Waiting for metro WiFi in Vienna. :)

Brrrrrr.

Microsoft still doesn't get the Internet

Microsoft is not very good at covering up its own mistakes. Do they really think, they can get away with a note saying This press release has been edited since original publication.? Not in todays world.

The current press release regarding „Microsoft Makes It Easier for Organizations to Transition to Its Unified Communications and Collaboration Platform” reads:

More and more companies worldwide are making the strategic business decision to move to Microsoft’s unified communication and collaboration platform because of its integrated set of capabilities as well as new innovations including support for wikis, Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds, blogs, social networking tools, unified messaging and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) integration.

But the original version stated:

More and more companies worldwide are making the strategic business decision to move to Microsoft’s unified communication and collaboration platform because of its integrated set of capabilities as well as new innovations including support for wikis, Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds, blogs, social networking tools, unified messaging and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) integration. Microsoft represented 52 percent of the integrated collaborative environments market revenue in 2005, and experienced double-digit growth year over year the two years before (indicating 2004 and 2003), according to analyst firm IDC.

Strange, that they pulled that sentence, as there seems to be no report by IDC on „the integrated collaborative environments market”.

Dear Microsoft, YOU CAN NOT CONTROL THE INTERNET. What happens on the Internet/WWW, stays on the Internet/WWW. Period!

Vista - Available soon

Vista - Which one do you recommend

On January 30th Microsoft releases to consumers the newest version of its operating system, called Windows Vista. And as the media will be full of „vista is soo cool and innovative and enhancing productivity”, here are some interesting links.

CNN Money: Microsoft Vista: Should you buy now?

… only a small share of corporate users will be upgrading to Vista this year. Most who do will replace older PCs with new ones preloaded with Vista.

With User Account Control in the new Windows Vista operating system, you can reduce the risk of exposure by limiting administrator-level access to authorized processes.

Although the statement Vista, its long-awaited update to the Windows operating system, can’t run the current version of SQL Server is not correct, Microsoft admits, that they have a problem with UAC:

It is true that there is a known issue related to how Vista User Account Control impacts the ability to connect to a default installation of SQL Express SP1

Now, if even Microsoft can’t get their applications to work together properly with UAC, I do not even want to think about other software vendors, given the standards of microsofts public documentation.

DPI Lab 2007 - Recommended Reading

Carol Zimmet from the Deployments, Performance, & Interoperability (DPI) Lab posted a Recommended Reading list on their blog in response to suggestions we’ve received from you.

Unfortunately, she only posted a word-file (jup, not even in Openoffice.org format!!!) with all the links regarding articles, whitepapers, RedBooks, etc., that we’ve developed and we recommend for production environments.

So I took the liberty and converted them into an html-page. You will find all the links after the jump. All mistakes in this list are of course mine. Check out „Knowledge Enablement from DPI Lab 2007” for the original list. See more ...

Domino 8 - Best of

Here are a few – at least to me – interesting facts on Domino 8, that I collected at several sessions during Lotusphere 2007:

  1. ND8 adds support for 2048 bit keys for users and servers and 4096 bit key for certifiers
  2. Weak and medium encryption options have been removed from NSF file encryption (Existing databases using Weak or Medium encryption still supported)
  3. Still no support for CRLs, but for OCSP (RFC 2560) for checking revocation status of X.509 certificates.
    • OCSP is the way to go, as David S. Kern, resident Paranoid Lotus Software put it, as I asked him in the lab.
    • And … drumroll please … against all odds, A-Trust allready supports OCSP. Now I am a happy camper. :)
    • OCSP must be enabled to be used: OCSP_RESPONDER, OCSP_LOGLEVEL, OCSP_CERTSTATUS notes.ini variables for a Domino server
    • Thanks to Jason Gary of the Deployments, Performance, & Interoperability (DPI) Lab for listening to me and sending me over to David Kern.
  4. Internet Password Lockout – „3 strikes” for http (about time, I would say), but you can overrule it with user security policies for for CEOs or other users with special needs (rotfl)
    • Internet Password Lockout automatcially creates Inetlockout.nsf on each server and contains current lockout state
    • Deleting a user’s entry in inetlockout.nsf on the correct server will unlock
    • Each Inetlockout.nsf has the same replica ID, but replication is disabled by default
    • Lockout history is logged via DDM
    • Custom Login Forms can be created for locked out users
  5. More development centric (some of this stuff is allready available in 7.0.2 but the sold it as „new in 8” ;) ):
    1. Need to add attributes to the <html> tag? In Domino 8, just use the „$$HTMLTagAttributes” field.
    2. Want to controll the doctype of the html-document and other „pre”-html-tag stuff? Use the „$$HTMLFrontMatter”. At last, we are able to „choose” the quirks-mode of the browser.
    3. $$HTMLOptions controls HTML generation at the form or field level. Valid (name=value pairs) are RowAtATimeTableAlt, ForceSectionExpan, ForceOutlineExpand, DisablePassThruHTML and TextExactSpacing.
    4. DisablePassThruHTML will be a way to prevent end-users from putting HTML tags into fields
    5. There is JSON support in Domino 8 URLs!!! And word of mouth has it, that this also works in Domino 7 (try it out ;). Just add „$OutputFormat=JSON” to „?ReadViewEntries”.
See Codestore: Putting Domino’s JSON to Use for more details.
    6. New C-API to allow stand alone applications to access Notes documents and get back HTML. There are also routines for accessing URLs. This will make Rod Boothby very happy. ;)
    7. $Abstract – This field will hold the first n Bytes of Body field for display in a view
  6. Domino 8 will have an I/O reduction by 50% (no new hardware necessary?)
  7. New ODS version (optional on update) with these benefits:
    • design document compression will lead up to 50 % smaller templates
    • On demand Collations -> no additional view index for every sort-option in a view
    • Enhanced User Activities
  8. Transaction logging optimization
  9. General Availability for DB2 as a datastore
    • DB2->Notes user mapping eliminated for Query Views
    • official support for mail databases
    • Special fields (columns like Server, DBName) in DB2 Access Views
    • HTTP Parameterized Query Views -> @URLQueryString to use HTTP-parameters in SELECT-statements
  10. Persistend Mail Threads – threads will render, even if the root of the message.exchange is not present

And this is just an excerpt, watch out for more.

Lotusphere 2007 - It's over

It’s over. Closing session had Neil deGrasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, as a speaker. A great ending of a week that started with Neil Amstrong. Loved it.

There was not that much coverage of the big news that IBM presented this week. But I think everybody will have to digest what they heard. I will probably blog about it in the next days.

Now, after a short rest, it is of to Broadway to get some presents. I really looking forward to getting home soon. Next year, I will definately not go to Lotusphere alone.

In case you were wondering what you missed, here are some glimpses:

Pegasus Mail - Reborn From the Ashes

Good news from David Harris, author of the outstanding Mail-Client (MUA) Pegasus Mail:

  • In response to overwhelming feedback, I have decided to restart development of Pegasus Mail and Mercury.
  • Pegasus Mail will probably become „donationware” with a regular reminder to donate (you can select the period - 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or 1 year). There will be no obligation to donate.
  • The Mailserver „Mercury” will become free for a certain base number of mailboxes. […] For more users than this, a license will be required.

The complete message from Davod Harris is available at the Pegasus Mail Announcement Mailinglist Archive.

Yes, I am still alive. Due to some incidents, I wasn’t able to blog more or earlier.

I will probably skip the party at Animal Kingdom tonight and will hopefully catch up with my e-mails, RSS-feeds and blogging.

Lotusphere 2007 is great, lots of great, interesting content. I will try to summarize ASAP. Normal services will be restored soon.

Lotusphere 2007, Day 0

Technical difficulties prevented me from blogging earlier. Details on that later. As SWMBO has allready blogged about my leave to Lotusphere 2007, I will spare you the details, why I stayed up very long, to get everything ready before I left.

I decided to fly AUA again. The alternative – with KLM via Amsterdam – would have spared me the transit in Washington, but I am not willing to wait 10 hours at Amsterdam airport to wait for my connection-flight back home.

The flight was, as usual uneventfull. The AKG K 28 NC headphones (with integrated active noise reduction) I had for the flight were greate. The airplane noise was noticeable softened.

Upon arrival in Washington, I was not as lucky as vowe. I had about 1,5 hours to get through Immigration, Customs and Security to catch my connecting flight to Orlando. After immigration, there were about 5 minutes left. So I lost my customs form, got a new one, filled that out, got the immigrations officer to sign it and passed customs (by handing out the form to a bored official.

Could somebody explain to me, why I have to get my bag, drag ist along for about 100 meters and drop it of in a heap of other luggage in front of an x-ray machine? And why do I have to be scanned again, before I get to my connection flight? I got checked in Vienna and had no chance to leave the restricted area.

And while we are at it – why are there no restrooms between the airplane and immigrations? Next time, I will piss in the corner of the hall in front of the imigration counters if they need over an hour to process a few passengers. But I guess that the arrival of three european airplanes took them by surprise.

After a short sprint (thanks to some renovation, you do not need a bus shuttle to get from international arrivals to the domestic flights any more) I barely cought my flight, meeting vowe and the guys from Pentos. The flight itself was uneventfull and I arrived in Orlando at about eight in the evening. A good hour later, a Mears shuttle, conveniently disguised as a Disney’s Magical Express bus, dropped off ute, vowe, Wolfgang Sommergut and me at the Dolphin.

The plan was to go to the ESPN Sports Bar for a night cap with vowe, Turtle, Duffbert and the others, but I got highjacked by a few fellow Austrians. A few beers later, I went back to the Dolfin and hit the sack.

Geheilt

Microsoft to kill HTML-Mails in Outlook 2007

There was much talk about Microsofts decision to change the HTML rendering engine in the upcoming Outlook 2007. There were headlines like „Microsoft takes email design back 5 years” or „Microsoft Breaks HTML Email Rendering in Outlook 2007”.

Now is that really true? Is it such a bad thing that CSS, Flash and other features are not supported any more?

Aha. OK. Nicht sonderlich aufregend. Ja, aber … ;)

HE HE HE!

Microsoft is definitely going to talk — at long last — about its plans for Windows Home Server (code-named „Quattro”) at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, according to my sources.

Update Weekend

Ha, Saturday a public holiday, not much planned – I can really do what I want this weekend (eg. enabling comments in my blog).

BEEP! Wrong assumption, thanks for playing.

Instead of backing up, reinstalling XP and trying to install Vista and openSuSe 10.2 on my laptop, I had the pleasure of fixing/updating Flo’s Thinkpad T60p, Pipos Sony Vaio and backing up and installing from scratch SWMBO’s Targa Visionary XP120 (don’t ask). And upgrading SWBO’s blog to Serendipity 1.1 along the way.

Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2007

We will see.

Wer wissen will, was WIRKLICH auf der CES zu sehen ist, muss nur bei vorbeischauen.

Performance Tuning with Perl

If you search Google for „perl performance tuning”, you will find quite a few interesting hits. As I had to modify one of the Perl scripts I thought „what the hack, I will try to improve it’s performance too”. Every seasoned programmer will tell you, that this is a dangerous thought. Nevertheless, after I modified the script according to requirements, I took on it’s performance.

Every text I read stressed the fact, that you should test the performance of your script and of the modifications you made. So I familiarized myself with the Benchmark module and ran an initial benchmark:

283 wallclock secs (277.34 usr + 0.67 sys = 278.02 CPU) @ 0.02/s (n=5)

As the code basically reads a log-file from the disk, parses every line and writes out some stuff, I thought I could speed it up by reading the file into memory up front and iterate through that, thus decreasing disk I/O and speeding up the script. Well, the outcome of this „improvement” left me underwhelmed:

256 wallclock secs (252.03 usr + 0.00 sys = 252.03 CPU) @ 0.02/s (n=5)

Not really the improvement I was looking for. So I implemented one of the suggestions, precompiling the regular expressions I am using. As I have arrays of regexes in my script, this sounded promising. I little side-benchmark showed an improvement from 15,4 down to 4 seconds for 100.000 iterations of my little test-script. So I implemented that in my real-word example and got:

258 wallclock secs (253.52 usr + 0.00 sys = 253.52 CPU) @ 0.02/s (n=5)

OK, that was not really nice. So I tried the next tip – „Don’t modify stack”

The following sin is frequently found even in the Perl doc:
my $self = shift;
Unless you have a pertinent reason for this, use this:
my( $self, $x, $y, @z ) = @_;

So I checked my code for „shift @_” and improved that. And this is what I got:

95 wallclock secs (93.09 usr + 0.00 sys = 93.09 CPU) @ 0.05/s (n=5)

WOW. Now that is NICE. From 258 seconds down to 90. That’s what I call an improvement. Now there was one more thing to try – „pass by reference” instead of „pass by value”. As I pass around a lot of text, this actually made sense to me. So I modified all function calls to use „pass by reference” and benchmarked it:

95 wallclock secs (93.94 usr + 0.00 sys = 93.94 CPU) @ 0.05/s (n=5)

OK, that didn’t help as much as I had anticipated. But I am quite happy with the „do not modify stack” improvement. That gave a boost to my script that made a difference. I was surprised that the read ahead of the data did not gave more of a speed boost. I attribute that to the read ahead cache in the modern hard disk drives and operating systems.

My advice: Measure your „improvements”, try a few different approaches and do not rely entirely on synthetic benchmarks. If you can, try to benchmark production code.

January - Month of the date-errors

I learned something these days: date-functions are not only a good idea, you should also use them! Why? Because otherwise, you run into a whole lot of trouble, like scripts aborting without a reason, monthly log-data getting added to the wrong month, etc.

Take Perl for example. Paul Programmer does not want to reinvent the wheel and therefore uses Date::Calc for his date-related calculations. To get the number of days in a month he uses

$days = Days_in_Month($year,$month);

Nice, isn’t it? Unfortunately, the caffeine supply was temporarily suspended and so this code sprang into life to calculate last months number of days:

$days = Days_in_Month($year,$month-1);

Do you know what happened in January? Exactly, a run-time error. Bad! After the caffein supply was restored, Paul Programmer quickly fixed the bug with this:

my($lastyear,$lastmonth,$lastday) = Add_Delta_YM($year,$month, 1, 0, -1);
$days = Days_in_Month($lastyear,$lastmonth);

A lot nicer, isn’t it?

The same is true in Notes-Programming. If Nora Notesprogrammer wants to adjust a DateTime value, she uses the corresponding functions:

Dim dtToday As NotesDateTime
Dim dtLastMonth As NotesDateTime
Set dtToday = New NotesDateTime( "Today" )
Set dtlastMonth = dtToday
Call dtLastMonth.AdjustMonth( -1 )

Totenmontag

Unbedingt lesen!

Rest in Peace, Pegasus Mail

The Good Old Days

We used Pegasus Mail for Novell/DOS. ;)

I have been an avid user of David Harris excellent MUA „Pegasus Mail”. I even paid for the manuals, etc. As was to be expected, David Harris decided to stop developing Pegasus Mail due to insufficient funding. Unfortunately, I am not in a position right now to do anything about that.

Pegasus Mail is, at least for me, still one of the best e-mail clients out there. Very standards compliant, keyboard oriented (Quick folders anyone) and very flexible. In one of my earlier jobs, I was able to implement an automatic e-mail printing system (talking about perversions) on the basis of Pegasus Mail very qiuckly and easily.

David Harris also stopped development of Mercury Mail 32, his standards- and Windows-based e-mail Server. Due to the small memory footprint and the AUTH capabilities, this is/was a often used E-Mail Gateway-Server for small scale Notes/Domino-Implementations, that needed a way to authenticate to their providers SMTP-server for sending mail.

Although the starting-page of pmail.com does not contain any links, the subsequent pages like the download-page are still available. If you want to grab the download, the mirrors are still up too.

I will stay with Pegasus Mail as my main personal MUA for the foreseeable future as there are no alternatives with a comparable featureset immediately available. It’s not like Pegasus Mail will stop working, as there is no further development.

Alas, some time in the future, I will have to switch to another MUA. Do you have any suggestions? Just keep in mind, that these „MUAs” were, are and will not be acceptable:

  • Outlook
  • Windows Mail
  • Eudora
  • Webmail like GMail or GMX
  • mutt

Bezos shows first space ship

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000, with the aim of developing a new type of vertical-takeoff, vertical-landing rocket ship capable of taking passengers to the edge of space. He has now shown Goddard, the company’s first vertical take-off and landing vehicle, to the public for the first time.

MySQL AB Tries an Apology

In a recent Slashdot story, a disgruntled Debian developer posted that „MySQL [has] quietly deprecated support for most Linux distributions on October 16, when its ‘MySQL Network’ support plan was replaced by ‘MySQL Enterprise.’ MySQL now supports only two Linux distributions – Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.”

In a note from MySQL AB public relations, a MySQL representative said, „MySQL AB apologizes for any miscommunication that may have implied that the MySQL database does not run on the popular Debian Linux operating system, or that the company does not offer technical support for MySQL Enterprise subscribers using Debian.”
This comes quite close to John Clese’s famous line:
I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future.

Standardized Plugs for Mobile Phones

Picture of a USB-Port/by Pedro VieiraIt seems that both Korea and China decided to enforce a standard way of connecting and charging a mobile phone. Whereas Korea apparently goes for a proprietary solution, China picked up Volker’s idea and settled for a USB-Port.

Could we have that „usb as a standard” in Europe too? EC, are you listening? I don’t care about the standardization of the banana curving but this would actually make sense!

Vier mal „Web 2.0”

Deshalb muss man Informationen extrem ehrlich kommunizieren.”.
