IBMs legal morons

Ben is a great guy. For the 8th consecutive year, he offers a Session Database for IBMs Lotusphere conference. IBM has no comparable offer to it and even linked prominently to it from it’s Lotusphere site.

After the conference, he added LINKS to the blogs and homepages of several speakers, where they uploaded their updated slides and code examples, providing even more value by linking to freely available information on the web.

Today, Ben was asked by IBM to stop including the LINKS in his database, as IBM wants to control and limit the distribution of such content. Remember, all that Ben did was include a LINK, not the slides and code examples, into his database.

Clueless legal morons is all that comes to my mind. These are probably the same clueless lawyers, that put the disclaimers on almost any slide during the Lotusphere 2008 General Opening Session:

Mind the disclaimer!

Ben, if I were you, I would „ask” IBM to not link to your database any more. I also wonder why the links in Ben Poole’s Lotusphere 2006 wiki didn’t trigger the same response back then.

Let me emphasize once again: Ben did not put the PDFs of the slides, which are available on the Lotusphere 2008 Website for attendees into his database. All he did was add some links to publicly available websites – much like Google. And IBM does not want that.

Maybe IBMs own „marketing f*cktard” ;) can fix this problem.

And the funny thing is, someone else has allready done, what IBM tried to prevent and Ben never intended to do: all the slides are for free on the web.

So to all the clueless legal morons at IBM: The least you have to do now is to give a big, public apology to Ben. Pronto, if you don’t want to permanently damage IBMs reputation among it’s most loyal customer base!

Microsoftisch-Deutsch, Deutsch-Microsoftisch

Februar in LA starten sollte.

So. Aus. Ende.

Kamera-Watch mit Orwell.at

Myth: Vista better then Linux - Status: Busted

Computer operating systems loaded with stuff I don’t want and will never use.
In the tech world this phenomenon is known as “software bloat” or “feature bloat.” It’s a well-documented problem and a frequent complaint about Windows OSs—Vista in particular. In addition to being buggy, the extra features tend to bog down your system by demanding more processing power and memory.

There’s another solution available to consumers: Switch to a Linux-based OS such as Ubuntu.

So says Jamie Hyneman of Mythbusters fame.

Lotusphere 2008 - Slides and more

Stephan Wissel already posted a small script to download all the presentations from IBMs server, if you have Lotusphere credentials, vowe adopted that for the Mac.

I have another version, which will get you the color, as well as the black & white version and all zip files. Whereas Stephan statically lists all files, I am using wget’s recursive download feature. So you can run the script maybe once a day in case IBM still adds some slides to the database.

Getting the files

Step 1: Get wget (Download also available for Windows)

Step 2: Run the following script in the directory, where you want to store the PDFs temporarily („C:\TEMP” for example):
wget --http-user=USERNAME --http-password=PASSWORD -E -r -l5 -nd -np -nc -R.html "http://www.ls08.net/confapps/pdf.nsf/f0e495c6939dbf4585256e1c000e1a49?OpenView&Count=5000"
wget --http-user=USERNAME --http-password=PASSWORD -E -r -l5 -nd -np -nc -R.html "http://www.ls08.net/confapps/pdf.nsf/ceda8c2d1ee3648785256e1c000e1a47?OpenView&Count=5000"
wget --http-user=USERNAME --http-password=PASSWORD -E -r -l5 -nd -np -nc -R.html "http://www.ls08.net/confapps/pdf.nsf/729ed56c24bafc9d85256e1c000e1a46?OpenView&Start=1&Count=5000"

USERNAME and PASSWORD have to be replaced with your credentials for Lotusphere Online. REMEMBER: Lotusphere Online will only be available until February 22nd at 5:00pm EST.

Storing the files

Now, there a lots of files in the directory you specified. Content with that? Not me. I want them inside Genii Software’s Annual Lotusphere Agenda Database, so that I have everything in one place and full text indexed.

So I created a litte agent that goes through all the session, checks whether there are files for that session in the specified download directory and if that is the case, appends them to the corresponding session database entry. It even sets the fields for color and b&w PDFs so that this information shows up in the views. I also hacked the views to show an additional column for ZIP-Files – but you don’t need to do that.

Screenshot Session Database

What you do need to change ist the hide-when formula of the line containing the „Resource” field in the „JournalEntry” mask to: HasResourceLink != "Yes" & HasPDF != "Yes" & HasBWPDF != "Yes" & HasZIP != "Yes". Otherwise, the PDF files won’t show up.

I will contact Ben on this and a few other modifications I did. But basically with the agent and the change to the hide-when formular you are done and have all the documents in your session database.

Modified Session entry

As you can see, the PDFs are in there but without a nice icon. This is due to the fact, that they were attached via the backend. <shameless plug for Ben>If you/I had Ben’s Midas Rich Text LSX, you could add a nice icon to the files.</shameless plug for Ben>

What I am not sure of right now is what happens, if Ben updates the links to the speakers. Maybe I will have to move the files into another field. I will contact Ben on this.

Lotusphere Blues

Here I am, day three after the annual Lotusphere conference at 2:30 am CET wide awake. Why?

Part of it is probably jet lag. In his book Pattern Recognition, William Gibson writes:

Her mortal soul is leagues behind her, being reeled in on some ghostly umbilical down the vanished wake of the plane that brought her here, hundreds of thousands of feet above the Atlantic. Souls can’t move that quickly, and are left behind, and must be awaited, upon arrival, like lost luggage.

So I am waiting for my soul to catch up with my body. During that time, lots of things happen. I enjoy being amongst those I love, being at a place I call home. I enjoy the foods and drinks I am used to. I enjoy the silence I didn’t have for the last week. I also still enjoy the buzz I got from being amongst other „freaks”/professionals for whole week, listening, learning and talking about something I like to do.

But now, at 2:24 am – in the middle of the night – everyday life is creeping up on me. There is this whole unsorted heap of things and stuff I would like to do or redo with the knowledge from last week. There are still so many things I learned that I would love to communicate, that I don’t know, where to begin. And I should set up another blog for this and that before I start writing or shouldn’t i, … – you get the idea.

And there are all these mundane, energy draining things that I HATE to do, that shouldn’t even be necessary, if some people would behave like decent living beings and not like assholes. But they are not, so I have to waste my time and energy to ward these people and their non-issues off.

All that is coming back now after a week of bliss, that could only have been better, if swmbo would have been with me.

So here I sit now, at almost three o’clock in the morning, ranting on instead of getting some sleep to tackle tomorrows mayham. Oh well, I will cope anyway. Let’s see how this will end.

What 20 Mio. Euros apparently can't buy ...

… is a database that’s immune to SQL injection attacks.

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is a standardization organization of the telecommunications industry (equipment makers and network operators) in Europe, with worldwide projection. ETSI has been successful in standardizing the GSM cell phone system and the TETRA professional mobile radio system. Also, several standards regarding data retention were developed by ETSI. According to Wikipedia, ETSi hat a budget of over 20 Mio. Euros in 2005.

Apparently, that was not enough money to secure the database/application against SQL injection attacks. Try http://www.etsi.org/Application/Search/?search=’ and you get:

An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request

Nice to see, that Microsofts „Security Initiative” reached the well educated .NET programmers at ETSI.

Lotusphere 2008 - It's over

I am (physically) back home (after successfully convincing the customs guy in Amsterdam, that my digital camera was not purchased in the US), whereas my internal clock is still somewhere in between US Eastern and Central European Time.

Still a lot to digest after this one week of brutal information download and networking. I am physically drained but have actually no time to recharge, as the infrastructure team decided to roll out a new server next week, which means that we will have to fix the stuff they are going to break.

But I will try to summarize the most important information I got over the last week in the upcoming days. Stay tuned for that.

Duffbert has summarized the mornings (got up at 6am EVERY morning) during Lotusphere quite well with this LOLcat:

Lotusphere Day 1

As always, Lotusphere is a blast. This year, Sunday was a „complete” day, including breakfast and lunch buffet, and sessions going on from 8 am to 6 pm.The weather was rather cold, although the sun was shining (or so I am told).

View from my balcony I

Apart from attending sessions, I met quite a few friends, colleagues and fellow Domino geeks and generally had a good time.

Good Evening

In the evening, the obligatory Beach Party aka. „Welcome Reception” took place. As it was rather cold, they should have served mulled wine (Glühwein) instead of beer and ice cream. But the mood was good, lots of shivering people moving around – apart from the Americans, which stood glued to the TV sets, as there was a (American) football game on.

Welcome Recpetion

Due to the food, beer and exhausting day, I wasn’t able to blog on sunday.

JMP205 AJAX and JSON for IBM Lotus Domino Applications

Official description:

Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) are among the hottest technologies in Web application development today. Beginning with the release of Lotus Notes 7.0.2, Lotus Domino can natively serve up JSON to web browsers and, more importantly, to AJAX-enabled applications. In this session, you’ll learn how to leverage both these important technologies in your Lotus Domino Web applications to make them smarter, faster and easier to build.

Scott Good delivered a very good (what a pun!) session on JSON and AJAX, starting with JavaScript variables, slowly picking up onto JASON and then covering AJAX and how you couls use it with Domino – even with older Domino versions.

JMP205 AJAX and JSON for IBM Lotus Domino Applications

  • Beginning with Domino 7.0.2, you can get JSON from web views “…/ViewName?ReadViewEntries&OutputFormat=JSON”
  • ”myAjaxReq = createAJAXRequest(“theURL”, “theFunctionToRun”);” allows for parallel AJAX calls without the calls overwriting each other
  • var jsonObject = eval(ajaxReq.responseText);
  • Where all can you get JSON from Domino?
    • Notes Views
    • Using ?ReadViewEntries&OutputFormat=JSON
    • Notes Views
    • Custom JSON objects
    • Notes Pages
    • Notes Agents
    • JavaScript Libraries
    • JS Header
    • Computed Text or field in the form

What I did like

Great session, lots of short, well conceived and delivered demos. Small, understandable code snippets. Scotta showed a few concepts I will think about implementing myself.

What I did not like

What if you don’t have JavaScript? Than you are technically screwed. I don’t like that apporach. There are several legal and technical reasions, why a web app should work even without JavaScript. The fact, that the browser back-button usually doesn’t work with JavaScript isn#t a problem for Scott, but my experience with users tells me differently.

JMP404 QuickStart: Introduction to IBM Lotus Expeditor and Eclipse Architecture

Official text:

Lotus Expeditor, which is IBM’s new JavaEE client application development and runtime platform, is based on Eclipse, and is also the basis for our latest version of IBM Lotus Notes 8, IBM Lotus Sametime 7.5 & 8, and Lotus Symphony. If you want to know more about the Java programmability features that are available in the Lotus Expeditor platform, this Quickstart is for you. We’ll cover all of the basics of Lotus Expeditor programmability and runtime capabilities. Come and get a real foundation for many other sessions presented throughout the rest of the week.

Jim Robbins, Expedtor Lead Architect and Pierre Carlson tried to explain, what Lotus Expeditor is (“Both a product and a platform”). But after this revealing fourth slide, the session went down the drain.

Instead of some code and a few simple examples, Jim and Pierre presented overloaded slide after overloaded slide. The only variety were a few flash “demos”, where they couldn’t even get the solution right so you could see it in the last rows. The let the videos just roll, they didn’t even comment on the action on the screen or added something to the recorded audio.

What I did like

What I didn’t like

Lots. Sorry. That session was a waste of time. If I had known that, I would have attended another session – there would have been enough. Tipp: If you need a table of acronyms and their meaning for a JumpStart session, there is something wrong!

JMP203 Lotus Notes/Domino Application Development With DXL

Official description:

Lotus Domino XML (DXL) is a representation of Lotus Notes and Domino data in XML format and provides a great way to expose Lotus Domino application data to other platforms or to process data and design notes within an application. In this session, we’ll cover the basics of XML and DXL, and demonstrate examples of simple things one can do with DXL. Jump in and get ready to „jumpstart” your Lotus Notes and Domino application development with DXL!

JMP203 Lotus Notes/Domino Application Development With DXL I

Sumeet and Nick tried to span a broad topic, ranging from XML, DTDs, validation, namespaces, XLST to DTD and XML parser. Quickly building up the basic XML concepts, they switched from XML to DXL, how to use it in LotusScript, Java und C and then turning back to XML, Xpath and XLST and ending with the different XML parser-types and what to do with them.

Main points for me:

  • Watch out for the DXL Importer-Options for documents and design elements. Default is “do nothing”.
  • Starting in Notes 8, you can use “Exporter Filtering” to omit parts from the DXL ( OmitRichtextAttachments, RestrictToItemNames, etc.).
  • Starting in Notes 8, you can get the actual MIME of an e-mail in DXL (exporter.MIMEOption = MIMEOPTION_DXL)
  • exporter.UncompressAttachments = False prohibts the compression of attachments during the DXL-export, significantly improving running time at the cost of larger XML files.
  • Design-Elements not yet implemented in DXL: Navigators, Embedded Navigators, Web Service client library, Layout Regions in forms, WebServices
  • Sumeet: We are approaching 100% fidelity, For many uses, DXL in current releases is sufficient

JMP203 Lotus Notes/Domino Application Development With DXL II

What I did like

Very good “jumpstart”, picking the user up at the XML basics and taking them through all the DXL/XML goodness in two hours, touching on every “important” topic. IMHO a very carefully conceived session.

What I didn’t like

Although the session was all in all very good, I would have preferred to her more or see more demos on how I could use DXL in my everyday work as a developer.

JMP403 QuickStart: IBM Lotus Quickr in Action

Official description:

This session provides an end user-oriented overview of Lotus Quickr, demonstrating its capabilities and showing how you can use them to collaborate around content. We’ll demonstrate how easy it is for end users to create a new Lotus Quickr place, add members, share content through document libraries, wikis, blogs, lists, team calendars, and discussions. We’ll also cover how to access the shared content through Web browsers, feeds, IBM Lotus Notes, IBM Lotus Sametime, IBM WebSphere Portal, Microsoft Windows Explorer and Microsoft Office. Finally, you’ll see a preview of new features considered for future releases of Lotus Quickr.

JMP403 QuickStart: IBM Lotus Quickr in Action II

A nice start into Lotusphere 2008. Nothing outstanding, but a solid session with quite a few demos.
During the session John Schumacher hinted on a new (browser-based?) MashUp-Solution for Quickr, Lotus Quickr Content Integrator and Quickr Connectors for Symphony and Outlool.

JMP403 QuickStart: IBM Lotus Quickr in Action II

What I liked

Session delivered a good overview on the capabilities of Quickr. Professionally run demos (just remember the correct username, Tracy ;)).

What I didn’t like

Bad timing of the session. Quite a few topics suffered from the fact that John couldn’t talk about all the features.

Lotusphere Day 0

I am in Orlando, hurray!

This year, I strayed from the trotten path and tried a different route to Lotusphere 2008. Instead of flying AUA via Washington, I chose KLM to Amsterdam and a direct flight with MartinAir from there to Orlando.

Leaving Vienna

Check in in Vienna held the first surprise. They were able to check through my luggage and me, even giving me my preferred asile seat. The cityhopper to Amsterdam was uneventful, I slept most of the time.

In Amsterdam I had over an hour to catch my connecting flight. Due to the very good signs and labels, I found Passport Control (leaving Shengen, therefore the glance at your passport before you enter transit zone) and my gate immediately. After my second security check of the day, I was on board my flight. Next time, I will ask the guys from MartinAir, why they are handing out the greed US-Visa Waiver during check in, but not the customs form. Well, whatever.

The 11+ hours flight with MartinAir was OK. As the Boeing was not full, I was allowed to switch seat. So I shared the middle seat with a nice lady and hat more room then anticipated – except from the fact, that the obnoxious guy in front of me kept his seat put back during the whole flight.

As the „entertainment offerings” on board MartinAir are payed extra (a portable Media Play with old Films like „Devil wears Prada, …” I kept to my newspaper, my book and the MP3 player full of audio books.

The food was OK, you got water whenever you wanted and the babies on board kept crying to a minimum. And after a little while, you didn’t even noticed the smell of disinfectant.

We landed on time, got of the play and – LOW AND BEHOLD – there were washrooms on the way from the airplane to immigration. Immigration itself took another whopping two hours. But as I did not have to catch a connecting flight (which was my intention in flying through Amsterdam), I was able to wait in a relaxed manner.

Getting my bag was a matter of seconds, getting through customs too. What I forgot was the fact, that Orlando Airport is separated into two parts. So I had to let go of my luggage again, to have it transported to the other part of the airport. After that, I took the shuttle train from the gate to the airport, passed the third security check of the day, this time with taking of my shoes (after 14+ hours of travel!) and got my luggage again.

Thunderstorm in Orlando

At least, that was the plan. Due to the weather (a thunderstorm came up, after I landed, the luggage took another hour to get from the gate to the airport. And even worse, it was drenched in rain. Fortunately, my stuff did not get wet, only damp in a few places.

After another 30 Minutes wait, my Mears shuttle arrived to get me to the Swan hotel. So, approximately four hours after touchdown, I arrived at the hotel. Check in was a breeze and the room is as fine as every year. Pictures will be on flickr.

After a quick shower, I drop by at the ESPN Sports bar for a few beers, a burger and to say hello to Bruce, Paul, Julian, Bill and the others.

Droped dead into my bead

More to follow.

Apple Senf

Time Capsule

248 Mbit/s (typischer Durchsatz: 74 Mbit/s).
Ist also nix, was man nicht vorher von anderen Herstellern auch schon kaufen konnte.

iPhone Software Update & SDK Release Date

iPod Touch Software Update

Zweiter Fehler: Kein LAN-Anschluss.
Also wirklich nicht.

BTW: How Addicted to Apple Are You?

E-mail software from IBM Corp. will be available on Apple Inc. iPhones and iPod Touch devices under a new partnership that brings together two big rivals of Microsoft Corp.

IBM plans a formal announcement of the Lotus Notes e-mail package for Apple’s portable devices at its Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Fla., next week. The software, which requires use of IBM’s Domino e-mail server program, will be free for users who already have a Lotus Web-access license and start at $39 per year for new users.

Holy Moly: Sun buys MySQL

Jonathan Schwartz, Chief Executive Officer and President Sun Microsystems, Inc. writes:

… we’re putting a billion dollars behind the M in LAMP. If you’re an industry insider, you’ll know what that means - we’re acquiring MySQL AB, the company behind MySQL, the world’s most popular open source database.

So what are we announcing today? That in addition to acquiring MySQL, Sun will be unveiling new global support offerings into the MySQL marketplace.

Sun fixes bug, makes me a happier Blogbridge user

My favorite blogreader is BlogBridge. I bit the bullet and bought the USD 5,–/3 month license for a unlimited number of feeds and am very happy with it. In their forum, they react to bug reports and questions in a timely manner and they even fixed „my” problem with the Vista UAC prompt.

One of the features, why I always recommend BlogBridge as a rss-reader, is the tagging-feature. If you have a del.ico.us account, just enter it in the settings and BlogBridge will retrieve your tags from del.icio.us and offer them, if you press „t” in an article. If you tag an article in BlogBridge and you entered your del.icio.us credentials, the tagged article will show up in your del.icio.us list. Fabulous!

Unfortunately, a bug in Suns Java Runtime Environment 1.6 prevented that functionality from working. For security reasons, del.icio.us insists on using SSL encrypted communication, which this bug prohibited. According to the Sun bug tracking system, this bug #6514454 already got fixed. Quote: „Release Fixed: 7(b16), 6u3(b01)”. Unfortunately, the problem still persisted in JRE-Version 1.6.0_03.

Luckily, the same bug report now states: „Release Fixed: 7(b16), 6u4(b01)”. And low and behold, it IS fixed in the JRE 1.6.0_04-b12 (you want to fetch the „Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4”).

Vista im Schuleinsatz

Die „British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA)” zum Thema Vista-Einsatz in Schulen:

We have not had sight of any evidence to support the argument that the costs of upgrading to Vista in educational establishments would be offset by appropriate benefit

there was no significant benefit to schools and colleges in running Aero

We advise that upgrading existing ICT systems to Vista is not recommended and that mixed Windows-based operating-system environments should be avoided.

there remains no compelling case for deployment

Recognising the limitations regarding Microsoft’s implementation of the ODF standard and the limited uptake of Microsoft’s new Office 2007 file format, we recommend that in the short term users should continue to use the older Microsoft binary formats (such as .doc)

Schools and colleges should make students, teachers and parents aware of the range of ‘free-to-use’ products (such as office productivity suites) that are available, and how to access and use them.
.

We believe that Vista can be considered where new institution-wide ICT provision is being planned.

Wann: SO 13.01.2008, 16:00 Uhr
Wo: depot, Breite Gasse 3, 1070 Wien (www.depot.or.at)
Was: Beschluss eines Volksbegehrens für mehr Demokratie; Organisatorisches
Wer: Alle interessierten Personen - VERBREITUNG ERWÜNSCHT

Vista „Erfolg”

Zune in Europa!?

In fact, we’ve been so pleased with the results in the United States for the first time we will begin selling Zune outside the United States in Canada this spring, and there will be more opportunities for us to expand in the future.

Vista Ärgernis++

Notable Changes in Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate

Microsoft published a list of „improvements” in the upcoming Windows Vista Service Pack 1. A few „high”lights:

  • Significantly improves the speed of moving a directory with many files underneath.
  • 25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine
  • 45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system
  • 50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system
  • Improves responsiveness when doing many kinds of file or media manipulations. For example, with Windows Vista today, copying files after deleting a different set of files can make the copy operation take longer than needed. In SP1, the file copy time is the same as if no files were initially deleted.
  • Improves the copy progress estimation when copying files within Windows Explorer to about two seconds.
  • Addresses a problem that caused a delay of up to 5 minutes after boot with specific ReadyDrive capable hard drives.
  • Improves the effectiveness of a Windows ReadyBoost device in reducing the time to resume from standby and hibernate by increasing the amount of data stored in the ReadyBoost device that can be used during a resume cycle.
  • Includes improvements to Windows Superfetch that help to further improve resume times, in many environments.
  • Reduces the time it takes to return to the user’s session when using the Photo screensaver, making it comparable to other screensavers.
  • In SP1, PC administrators are able to modify the network throttling index value for the MMCSS (Multimedia Class Scheduling Service), allowing them to determine the appropriate balance between network performance and audio/video playback quality.

All that and a lot more after five years of Vista development. Why in hell am I still using it ???

The line must be drawn here!

NICE!

Microsoft - Boldly going where Macromedia already failed

Top 10 Most Pirated TV Shows of 2007

TV-shows are by far the most popular files on BitTorrent sites. On Mininova alone, some episodes are downloaded more than 2 million times. The popularity of movies and TV-shows hasn’t gone unnoticed, with some TV-studios allegedly use BitTorrent as a marketing tool, and others leaking unaired pilots intentionally.

TorrentFreak made a list of the most downloaded movies and TV-shows of 2007 (downloads at Mininova):

  1. Heroes (2.439.154)
  2. Top Gear (1.217.923)
  3. Battlestar Galactica (706.209)

Jup, I understand that. :)

D'oh! - Open XML macht Dateien kleiner

Also vergleichen wir nochmal:

  • No explicit right to privacy in constitution but there are special laws for civil rights, including one for data protection; recent Supreme Court decisions are highly problematic
  • Data Privacy law does not apply equally to paper files; law is considered cumbersome by experts; also sectoral laws
  • Data Privacy Commission can bring civil and criminal provisions against institutions; but criticised for lack of independence
  • Prohibits use of genetic data by insurance companies
  • Medical data is treated as sensitive data by law
  • Legal requirement permitting Austrian military to request subscriber data from telecommunications providers
  • Centralisation of data on students that is stored for 60 years
  • Social security card with unique numbers but little other information is stored; number of abandoned initiatives including health data cards, or ‘citizen card’ have been abandoned; e-identity management system is heavily criticised
  • Judicial warrants for interception for serious crimes (10 years punishment or more)
  • CCTV and audio surveillance is now permitted where data is stored for 48 hours; but this has not been enforced adequately
  • Communications data is made available to copyright industry under Supreme Court decision
  • Postponed data retention
  • Matched DNA database with Germany in December 2006
