Self-Cleaning Clothes

Researchers at Monash University, in Australia, have found a process to coat natural fibers such as wool, silk, and hemp that will automatically remove food, grime, and even red-wine stains by coating their fibers with titanium dioxide nanocrystals, which break down food and dirt in sunlight. Titanium dioxide is a strong photocatalyst and in the presence of ultraviolet light and water vapor, it forms hydroxyl radicals, which oxidize, or decompose, organic matter.

ID3v2 Tag Information for Lotusphere 2008 recordings

IBM in her infinite wisdom decided to offer most of the sessions of Lotusphere 2008 as MP3s for the attendees. This is great, as you can listen to the sessions you were not able to attend.

Unfortunately, IBM/on24.com were not able to name the files in a consistent way, create usefull directory names and attach some basic ID3v2 tags (speaker, session name, …) to the recordings. As is, the files provided by IBM are not useful at all.

Fortunately, there is the great session database by Ben, which holds all the information you may want incorporated into the MP3s. So after „a few” hours of tweaking, I came up with two Windows batch files to add some information to the MP3s and rename them in an consistent manner.

In order for these batch files to work, you will need the following:

  • The MP3s as provided by IBM for the attendees. I can and will not provide these.
  • A nice logo.jpg file to attach to the MP3s. I took the first slide of the session PDFs. As they are also probably copyrighted I will not provide this as well.
  • metamp3.exe – the commandline tool to add ID3v2 tags to MP3 files
  • The two batch files addID3.cmd and relocate.cmd, provided as a zip-file.

First off, create a directory, eg. „ls08”, and expand the zip-files you downloaded from IBM into this directory. Important: Preserve the directory structure and if you encounter duplicate filenames (yes, IBM was not able to prevent naming conflicts), add the letter „a” at the end of the filename before the „.mp3”! Otherwise my script won’t work.

Copy the metamp3.exe, the logo.jpg you created and my two batch files into this directory. If everything is in place, first run „addID3.cmd” to add the ID3v2 information and after that „relocate.cmd” to create a directory structure under the first level name „SANITIZED” and rename/move the MP3 files into that structure.

As always: I take no responsibility regarding what the scripts do and any potential data loss. Always make backups first!

If everything works as planned, your MP3 folder should look something like this:

Screenshot MP3 folder

I have NO idea, why IBM/on24.com were not able to do the work I did. It would have been a lot easier for them.

Many thanks go once again to Ben for his great session database. My scripts would not have been possible without it.

And before you ask: No, I do not have a mac/linux version of my scripts. If you modified my scripts for the Mac or Linux please let me know, I will happily link to them.

BTW: If you still got the direct links to the MP3 zip-files, you can still download them, although IBM already closed down the website. Useful, if you are in Europe, as the download takes a lot of time and you may not have finished downloading yet.

Rich Media Maggots

This year, IBM decided to offer (almost) all sessions from Lotusphere as an MP3 recording. Great idea, but the execution lacked quite a lot.

After several days, running wget sessions inside several screen windows, I was able to obtain all 10 ZIP-files, each about 1.3 GIGABYTE. I don’t know, what line the server is sitting on, but it was definitely too slow for all 6.000+ attendees downloading the stuff. Get a decent torrent, IBM!

As the official Lotusphere 2008 site is already „closed” I panicked as I noticed, that one of the ZIP-files was corrupt. Fortunately, the download of all 10 files is still – although the site is officially closed – possible, if you have the direct URLs and your Lotusphere credentials. Download today was also quite fast, as there were no other users blocking the line. ;)
IBM: If you, at last, use Domino for the Lotusphere website, please use Dominos security features to „secure” the site.

According to my experience and a comment to vowes podcast-post posting, IBM is using services provided by on24.com. This company says about itself: ON24 Inc. is the leading provider of webcasting and rich media marketing solutions. ON24’s solutions provides companies a full range live streaming audio and video applications and services to meet corporate and marketing initiatives …

Yeah, right. Apparently, they let some marketing and media monkeys work on the recordings. There can’t be any other explanation. No person in his or her right mind would provide the recordings in a tree-structure like this:

+---01_21 Monday
| +---AD
| +---ID
| +---INV
| \---Other
+---01_24 Thurs
| +---AD
| +---ID

Jup, all 285 MP3 files are neither sorted by date, nor by track or any other meaningful order. It is just one big heap of files. You even get name conflicts, if you choose to unzip all files into one directory (preserving the stupid directory names).

There is also no structure in the naming of the files – eg. how to mark repeat session, if they are in the same folder, …

But what really pisses me off:

THERE ARE NO ID3 TAGS IN THE MP3 FILES !!! NONE !!!

It took on24.com almost a month to provide the MP3s and they can’t even be bothered to add some stupid ID3 Tags! Not even IDv1. Why this bothers me? Well, if you put the files on an Ipod or any other MP3 player, it looks like this:

empty tags in Winamp

This makes it really easy to select the session I want to here. Ok, the probably omitted the tags because they think that we Lotusheads know the sessions by their numbers and not their names.

The notes inside the directories also make for some fun reading:

It appears that the recording software failed during this session. I attempted to restart which was succesful and became JMP301.2 If this file should prove faulty, the audio does exsist on Video Tape.

Flash Drive Disk Error on 2 sessions in S3 on Monday

I completely missed the record on this session.

WHERE IS 1D107?

Session 3 lost, thumb drive pulled out too early

I missed the first half of this session. Wrong Button!

„ON24 has a best-in-class service offering: Professional Services consulting comprised of a team of seasoned event managers, Full production capabilities, Signal acquisition, Hosting, encoding, and distribution”. Yeah, right!

I am off to make some sense out of this mess.

Psst! Need a bridge?

metro.co.uk reports:

Police in the Czech republic are trying to find out who stole a 4 tonne railway bridge from the border town of Cheb.

The company which was responsible for looking after the bridge raised the alarm when, ever alert, they noticed that the bridge wasn’t there any more.

The bridge was on a disused stretch of line just outside Cheb.

Martina Hruskova, a spokeswoman for the Czech police, commented to AFP: ‘We are not sure if it was taken for personal use or for its scrap value.’ Exactly what that ‘personal use’ might be was left unsaid.

So if you see a suspicious person trying to sell you a bridge …

Listen All Of Y'all It's A Sabotage

Ars Technica reports:

From January 30 to February 6, various undersea cables responsible for much of the Internet traffic into and out of the Middle East were cut or broken.

Reports from those vessels have apparently indicated that the may not have been caused by accident or through natural events. According to the ITU’s (International Telecom Union) head of development, Sami al-Murshed, „We do not want to preempt the results of ongoing investigations, but we do not rule out that a deliberate act of sabotage caused the damage to the undersea cables over two weeks ago,”

Joel on the (old) Office File Formats

Joel on Software: Why are the Microsoft Office file formats so complicated? (And some workarounds)

IÂ’ll show you how those file formats got so unbelievably complicated, why it doesnÂ’t reflect bad programming on MicrosoftÂ’s part, and what you can do to work around it.

The first thing to understand is that the binary file formats were designed with very different design goals than, say, HTML.

They were designed to be fast on very old computers. For the early versions of Excel for Windows, 2 MB of RAM was a reasonable amount of memory, and an 80386 at 20 MHz had to be able to run Excel comfortably. There are a lot of optimizations in the file formats that are intended to make opening and saving files much faster

They were designed to use libraries. If you wanted to write a from-scratch binary importer, youÂ’d have to support things like the Windows Metafile Format (for drawing things) and OLE Compound Storage. If youÂ’re running on Windows, thereÂ’s library support for these that makes it trivial… using these features was a shortcut for the Microsoft team. But if youÂ’re writing everything on your own from scratch, you have to do all that work yourself.

They were not designed with interoperability in mind. The assumption, and a fairly reasonable one at the time, was that the Word file format only had to be read and written by Word. That means that whenever a programmer on the Word team had to make a decision about how to change the file format, the only thing they cared about was (a) what was fast and (b) what took the fewest lines of code in the Word code base.

They have to reflect all the complexity of the applications. Every checkbox, every formatting option, and every feature in Microsoft Office has to be represented in file formats somewhere.

They have to reflect the history of the applications. A lot of the complexities in these file formats reflect features that are old, complicated, unloved, and rarely used. TheyÂ’re still in the file format for backwards compatibility, and because it doesnÂ’t cost anything for Microsoft to leave the code around. But if you really want to do a thorough and complete job of parsing and writing these file formats, you have to redo all that work that some intern did at Microsoft 15 years ago. The bottom line is that there are thousands of developer years of work that went into the current versions of Word and Excel, and if you really want to clone those applications completely, youÂ’re going to have to do thousands of years of work. A file format is just a concise summary of all the features an application supports.

Web Club Austria

Lotusphere 2008 Podcasts

IBM is offering MP3 recordings of all the sesssion of this years Lotusphere. Great.
All downloads (one or more zip file per day) accumulate to whopping 13.31 GB. Not so great.
Even worse: Apparently IBM has it’s server(s) (or their media providers – on24.com if you want to know) on a 512 kbit line. The downloads will take „rather long”:

Length: 1.456.231.568 (1.4G) [application/x-zip]
 4% [> ] 58.729.828 17.36K/s ETA 16:54:38

Also was jetzt? POLITIKER!

Silver Bullet Wiki?

In his videblog „Day 8: Meeting Agenda”, Stewart Mader makes the following statement:

Instead of emailing a meeting agenda, put it on a wiki page and email people a link to that page. If changes need to be made, anyone on your team can do so and everyone will have immediate access to the same, up-to-date version

And how does that differ from a Word file on a fileshare, a Sharepoint place, an Exchange shared folder or a Lotus Quicker?

A fool with a tool is still a fool. If people are not used to working on ONE copy of a document – no matter what technology – they will still end up with several versions of the document. Eiter bei printing it to PDF, copying into the calendar-entry, etc.

You can’t change the way people think/work by offering yet another tool. IMHO you won’t get „better” meetings by offering a Wiki.

Reading/Listening tipp: „When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth” by Cory Doctorow

This week, I finally had the time to listen to Cory Doctorow’s podcast of „When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth”.

What should I say. I was flabbergasted. I expected a mildy amusing story of some kind, but what Cory delivered was an excellent short stories I read/heard for a long time.

Cory also received a Locus Award for best novelette of 2006 for this story. From his acceptance speech:

Systems administrators are the unsung heroes of the twenty first century, our tireless morlocks who keep the entire universe running. The best sysadmins I’ve met treat their jobs as holy callings. They understand that they’re keeping the infrastructure of the information age alive and functional.

„When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth” is the story of Felix and Van and their vainglorious struggle to keep the servers online as the world went offline:

It was bedlam. The cages were designed to let two or three sysadmins maneuver around them at a time. Every other inch of cubic space was given over to humming racks of servers and routers and drives. Jammed among them were no fewer than twenty other sysadmins. It was a regular convention of black T-shirts with inexplicable slogans, bellies overlapping belts with phones and multitools.

Get the story at Amazon in Corys collection „Overclocked: Stories of the Future Present”, read it online at the Rake or listen to Cory’s podcast.

Was hältst Du von Vista?

Exchange 2007: By default, Web beacons and HTML forms are set to UserFilterChoice. This blocks all Web beacons and HTML forms but lets the user unblock them on individual messages.
XP SP2: Now, when the DonÂ’t Download External HTML Content feature is enabled, the default behavior of Outlook Express changes so that it does not contact the Web server to download external content
How do I turn off javascript in Mozilla Thunderbird?

Great ThinkPad Hack: Wireless Site Surveys

Wireless site surveys are indispensable for developing accurate data models of network coverage in a variety of environments. Current options for creating a signal-strength map of a large area require time-consuming manual operations to designate points and record signal strengths. ThinkPads with the Hard Disk Active Protection System (HDAPS) accelerometers allow for the automation of much of this work through computed distance traveled and signal-strength measurements.

Use the accelerometer embedded in a ThinkPad to record your movements while monitoring your network connectivity. Use custom algorithms to extract footstep features from the recorded data, then automatically plot signal strengths on a floor-plan map to determine the best areas of coverage.

Requirements:
A ThinkPad that supports HDAPS.
You need a Linux distribution with kernel support for HDAPS. The HDAPS driver must be included in the kernel to enable access to the accelerometers. Newer kernel distributions, including Red Hat, Debian, Gentoo, and Ubuntu include HDAPS drivers.

Take your ThinkPad out for a walk to create wireless site surveys

The ARPANET Sourcebook: The Unpublished Foundations of the Internet

In 1966 IBM mainframes could only connect to other IBM mainframes, Burroughs only to other Burroughs, etc. Beginning in 1967 the US Defense Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) office sponsored development of a „heterogeneous” network compatible with computers from any manufacturer.
&nsp;
That R&D effort, one of the most successful in history, resulted in the on-time, on-budget construction of the revolutionary ARPANET, the immediate predecessor of today’s Internet.
&nsp;
The ARPANET Sourcebook: The Unpublished Foundations of the Internet reproduces the seminal papers, reports, and RFCs that led to the birth of modern network computing. Most appear here in book form for the first time.

The ARPAnet Sourcebook: The Unpublished Foundations of the Internet

Or, as Mr. Sterling likes to phrase it in his unmistakable ways: Too bad it costs eighty bucks … but eighty years from now, when nobody remembers the word „Internet,” a paper document like this one will seriously freak people out.

DEMOSCENE MEETING 0100 in Wien.

2) Nachtschicht: Merk dir: DIE SCHICHT IST PFLICHT !! Das sollte dein neues Lebensmotto werden. Hier verbringst du jedes Wochenende, mit deinen Hawaran

Hier kannst du dich in deinem Tanzstil üben.

„Voki Krocha“ ; „Krocharin deluxe“ ; ..

Anhang .

Lotus Domino Web Access (DWA): Problems with Firefox >= 2.0.0.10

Trying to use Lotus Domino Web Access with Mozilla Firefox Version 2.0.0.10 or higher? Then you have probably seen the following error message:

Domino Web Access Warning. Sorry, we were unable to process your request at this time. If you are unable to continue working in your mail file, please dismiss this warning and then select View, Refresh from your browser’s menu.

This is due to a change, documented in the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2007-37 – jar: URI scheme XSS hazard, and referenced in the Release Notes for Firefox 2.0.0.10 (Chapter „Security Issues”):

Support for the jar: URI scheme has been restricted to files served with a Content-Type header of application/java-archive or application/x-jar. Web applications that require signed pages must make sure their .jar archives are served with this Content-Type.

What that basically means is, that Firefox will no longer load .jar files, if they are not sent by the web-server with the appropriate mime-type. As IBM/Lotus has somewhat of a long legacy of not sending/setting the correct mime-type for files, this broke DWA.

Werner worked on this issue in the German atnotes.de forum since December 2007 and found the following workaround:

Add the following line to the file httpd.cnf

AddType .jar application/java-archive # Java Archive

and restart the http task.

According to Werner, IBM will issue a Hotfix/Fixpack for that.

Since Monday, there is also a Technote on this issue:
Technote 1289700: „Several Domino Web Access features do not work with Firefox 2.0.0.10”

This issue is currently under investigation (SPR# KMOA79C8WX). Please call IBM support to obtain a fix for this issue.

Yeah, right.

Me personally, I can theoratically see the benefits of Wikis in the Enterprise but still have to see a sucsessfull implementation. So I will follow the videocasts to see, if I will change my mind. So far, the first two episodes didn’t excite me very much.

The Spam Murderer

Charlie Stross reports:

I’m seriously considering pitching a detective novel, about the hunt for a serial killer. The unique selling point will be that as the detective homes in on the killer, he gradually comes to sympathize with him, and ends up questioning whether he should actually collar the murderer … because the victims are all spammers.

Which fits, as Charlie will probably base the story in Europe, which is, according to Symnantec, now the „king of spam” and responsible for 44 percent of all spam sent worldwide.

My Album Cover

So here is my album cover:

Ionica: must be carried steadily

Die Regeln:

The rules:
  1. Go to Wikipedia’s random articlea page. The first article you get is the name of your band.
  2. Go to the Random Quotations page. The last four words of the last quote is the album title.
  3. Go to Flickr’s „Interesting photo page. Third picture, no matter what it is, is your album cover.
  4. Put it all together to make your album. Either crop it to CD cover size, or just use the raw image itself … the only rule is you’re only allowed to add the album title and artist title.
You probably want to reload the Picture until you get one with an apropriate Creative Commons Licence.

As seen in the Lotus-Community.

So arbeiten Marketing-Leute ...

So arbeiten Marketing-Leute.

Lotusphere Comes to You - WTF is happening in Austria?

Lotusphere Comes to You” is, according to IBM, an event series featuring presentations designed to bring anyone who couldn’t get to Orlando the critical messages and the excitement they missed.

So you would think that IBM has an interest, that these events convey certain messages, are run in an orderly fashion, etc. Well, in theory. Now take a look what’s happening in Austria.

There are at least three different offers for Lotusphere recaps, four, if you count in edcom’s offer in Munich:

So in the little country of Austria, you got (counting in all repeats) SEVEN possible events to get the information presented at Lotusphere 2008. Crazy, isn’t it?

Also the events differ. Where bat-groupware offers one day of a Lotus/MS overview, edcom does two days in Munich, including several top notch IBM speakers that also did Keynotes at Lotusphere (Ron Sebastian, Niklas Heidloff, …(. Fritz & Macziol offers a whole day in either Salzburg or Vienna and ILS distills all the information in half a day in Salzburg, Graz and Vienna.

The „bat-groupware Collaboration World 2008” (one day) and „Lotusphere Wrap Up” (half day) are free of charge, the one day of „Lotusphere Essence .08” is going to cost you 198 Euros and for two days at edcom’s „Mini-Lotusphere” you get charged 980 Euros.

All these events are organized by IBM Business Partners and I can absolutely understand that they want to show off in front of their customers and don’t want to share this event with the competition. But for a Notes customer, these events do not make any sense at all. How should I decide, in which event I should take part? If you ask me, edcom is probably offering the best value – for a steep price. But this is probably the closest you get to an European Lotusphere (if you don’t count in the ILUG). But other then that, you probably either stick with your business partner or choose based on the date that fits in your schedule.

What I don’t understand is why IBM is allowing such a distributed approach. This IMHO hurts the Lotus brand and acceptance in Austria. Apart from the fact that the economies of scale won’t work for each individual approach.

Unfortunately, the Austrian Notes User Group (ANUG) is in hiatus/hibernation since 2004(?) and has not published a single news item or organized a single event in the last years. Maybe I should contact the few big Lotus customers I know in Austria, revive the ANUG and offer a business partner independent, consolidated „ANUG Lotusphere Comes to You” event next year. What do you think? Would that work?

As I was lucky enough to attend Lotusphere (yeah, that summary of mine is still in the works), I will probably skip all mentioned events (but I wouldn’t shy away from personal invitations ;)).

So einen USP kann man nicht erfinden

Erick Schonfeld/TechCrunch berichtet:

Silicon Valley startup called Teneros closed a $40 million series D financing today

What does Teneros do? It keeps crashing Microsoft Exchange e-mail servers from taking down a company’s access to e-mail by providing remotely-managed “continuity appliances” that basically back up the servers.

What I find ironic about this funding, and indeed this company, is that it is built entirely on the flaws of Microsoft Exchange. And its investors are willing to bet $84.5 million that Microsoft wonÂ’t be able to fix Exchange to obviate the need for TenerosÂ’ product.

Job Future

Maybe I should just give it all up and become a plumber. Plumbing is easy: Water goes downhill. The rest is just regulations and a willingness to get dirty…

Coincidence? I don't think so!

First, undersea broadband cables were damaged between Egypt and Italy, cutting off the Middle East, India and Bangladesh from the Internet. Then, a third undersea fibre optic cable running through the Suez to Sri Lanka was cut Friday. And another one near Dubai.

Coincidence? Let’s check The Internet Traffic Report to see, what countries suffer most from the outtakes:

The Iran? What a surprise!
